Skid Plate Suggestion?, 1989 - 1994 KDX200

Post by KDXGarage »

Hi. I am considering buying a skid plate for my 1994 KDX200. If any 1989 - 1994 KDX200 owners have a skid plate, can you share some comments on it plus tell which brand?

Here are the manufacturers I know of that make 1989 - 1994 KDX200 skid plates. If anyone knows of another brand, can you please list it?

MSR
Devol
Utah Cycle Sales (Rocky Mountain)
Moose

Thank you.

I bought a used skid plate from ebay. The guy wrote fit 89-94 kdx200 models.

I installed the plate on my bike and fit well. But my friend own a 220 2001 with a skid plate .I look at his skid plate and it is exacly the same as mine.I mean exacly identical! so i think 1995-2205 skid plates will fit your 94 model. But i can not be sure at 100% lol

I got a Moose skidplate for my KDX250 off of e-bay. It was new old stock and cost me about $20. The plate was for an 89 to 94 KDX 200 so I had to grind the mounting tabs a litte, but otherwise it fit and works great. It's a little heavy, but if I'm using a skid-plate then it means I'm not moto-xing and weight is not really an issue. Good luck!

Hi, 43Duc74 (what a username!). Thank you very much for sharing your experience with the Moose plate. Dennis Kirk has them for $60.95. I also have a 1991 KDX250. I may buy a skid plate for it one day, also. I bet I will have to buy an "other brand" model and try to make it fit like you did. Do you have any pictures of yours that you could post or send to my e-mail address?

Thank you again for your help.

I have a picture of the plate here:

If you want more detailed pics, let me know and I'll take some. It wasn't that hard to modify the mounting brackets using my bench grinder. I bought it not knowing if it would work... I figured I would just re-sell it if it didn't.

As for my username? Well, that's the name I use in most of the forums I subscribe to... 43 - my station number Duc748 - my other motorcycle. Keeps it simple.

Hi. Thanks for the pictures! Nice KDX250! Mine is currently in the "beat up" stage. Maybe I can get it to the "built up" stage by springtime.

Skid Plate Suggestion?, 1989 - 1994 KDX200

Post by Hockeygod »

Bumping an old 2005 topic as I am in the market for a skid plate for my 1989 KDX 200 E1. I bought her in 1990 (2nd owner) from the guy who owned the local Kawi store. Rode her for a year, then put her in storage (moved all over for work) until 2005 when I rode her a handful of times, then back into storage (kids!) Just got her out in Sept and figured I would add a few things; one being a skid plate.

I tried to find (from online retailers) the four previously mentioned in the first post but have only been able to locate the Moose plate - they seem to go for between $70-80. Does anyone know if the MSR, Devol, or unit from Utah Cycle Sales (Rocky) or others, are still available? If so, can you please provide links?

I haven't checked eBay extensively as I have never bought anything from there. I might have to try...

Also, any other comments about your current plates? Positive and negative comments welcomed!

I just found this site recently and must say it is very helpful! Kudos to those who started it, moderate it, and share info on it!

Cheers,

Dean

It looks like there are a couple options out there.

http://www.ricochetoffroad.com/store/page143.html You can even get this one custom anodized in various colors

This one says its 2000-2006, I don't know the frame difference under the engine enough through the years but it looks like a slick part...

This one looks nice...

Another that says its later model only but if its anything like the one in the photo it would be easy to adapt.

Just throwing this out there but another option is to make one. I'm planning to use high impact plastic sheeting, you can get it from several places in various thickness, pretty affordable and very tough. Can also be heated slightly to fit the frame after being cut to size. I've been looking at a company called Mcmaster-Carr as a source but I've also found the stuff through Amazon. I saw one on CR500riders that a guy made, looked like it would work great. Definately going to try it on my new hybrid project.

I was thinking of trying to make one too. Even the aluminum plates are fairly simple. It would be cheap enough to pay for a little professional welding to come up with something a little more unique and custom. I'll have to take a look at what is available for plastic, I know plastic cutting boards can be cut and molded with a heat gun.

Awesome, thanks for the replies!

I have thought about fabbing one; I might try. However, if I lazy, I will look to order one. The anodized colour one would be cool!
