Help me decide, 1999 200 or 2000 220?? With Pics!

Post by wyokdx »

Hey guys, new to the forum and will do proper introductions as soon as I get a bike. I am debating between 2, a 99 200 or a 00 220. Here is the background. I am 5'10 150#. I will be riding high tight mountain trails above 7000 feet. A 450 rarely gets out of 3rd gear.

99 200: Stored inside, not ridden much in 5 years, low miles for its age. Scott steering stabilizer, pipe, hand guards. Never been rebuilt. 2 owners. Bike is located close to me so a personal inspection is available. Wants $1100 firm.

2000 220: One owner, only ridden once a year on family vacations since new. Claimed less than 300 miles. Pipe, silencer, asf levers. Bike is in next state over so inspection is may not be possible. Never been rebuilt. Wants $1400 firm.

Both owners are very forthright in providing background info.

I am trying to add pics of both bikes, but having issues. I will load ASAP.

Thanks,
Bart

Welcome to kdxrider, about the bikes you cant go wrong with either bike. Both are bullet proof and an excellent choice for thigh stuff.

The porting is quite different on the two bikes, so that's something to keep in mind. It really depends on your preference. The 220 is ported for pure low end torque, the 200 revs out a good bit further and feels snappier up top.

My son an I love our 220's. We've both ridden his buddies 200 and prefer the 220's on the rocky trails, but maybe we're biased. Both our bikes have had the stock piston replaced. If the 220 hasn't been rebuilt, the consensus is the 1st thing you need to do is replace the weak factory piston. Welcome to KDXRIDER!!

The 220 would be great up in the thin air, but the 200 wouldn't require a top end rebuild right away to lose the stock piston. Price wise both sound like a good deal. With these bikes it's not so much about the age as it is the condition of the bike since nothing really changed on them....ever.....I'd go after the one that looks to be in the best condition.

Thanks so much guys. This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I believe the 220 might be in better condition, but I am weary of having to change out the piston right away. It just adds to the overall cost and I would like to ride right away. Still torn, so if anyone else can chime in it would be great.

Why would the 220 be better at high altitude?

220: rip in the seat, dented up expansion chamber, severely scratched up swingarm, paint nicely worn off where the riders boot rides up against the frame...in only 300 miles?
and what in the world is going on with those levers and how did he manage to get the front brake line to "line" up like that
200: also a full FMF exhaust, bark busters, steering dampener, I think I see fat bars on there? and looks to me to have less miles then the 220 (based on the bare frame mentioned before) AND it has the white tank shrouds, I bet you could sell those and buy 2 sets of any other colour
it does look like the front fender has been replaced once and the rear fender bag is missing so there may be 4 holes in there
when you look at it be sure to check the front end for good alignment (might not mean anything though, I've cracked front fenders in 20-30 MPH crashes without damaging anything else)

if it was my call, I wouldn't even bother with the 220 at this point, specially since the 200 is close enough to look at and not feel obliged to buy if it turns out to not be what you are looking for

would be interested to hear why you think the 220 is in better condition?

Honestly, I am calling the 220 better just based upon the sellers descriptions, but my eyes are telling me otherwise. The pictures look like the 200 is in just as good as shape as the 220. Maybe better. I will go look at the 200 soon. If it is decent I will probably buy it. It sure looks nice in the pics!!

look at both pictures real close (on the bottom right there is a magnifier you can click to supersize them)
my main concern with the 220 is the brake line
look at the way it sits in the 200, that is the proper way it goes
now look at the 220, something is fishy there

and while you have them up, look at the frame where the paint is rubbed off, that is perfectly normal but within 300 miles?

I see what you are saying. I really appreciate the help. I never would have known the brake line is off.
I don't know how many miles the 200 has, but it looks to be in very similar shape to the 220 and I think that is good enough for me. It looks to have been well taken care of. Thanks again. Looking forward to perusing the forum for all sorts of advice and ways to spend more money!!

You can click on the individual pictures to make them larger. After that there is a magnifying glass on the bottom right. Click that to see the original size pictures. That should help

The 220 looks like a rode hard and put away wet worn out roach. The 200 looks to be in better shape and has more accessories coming with it. I have a hard time believing that the 220 has 300 miles on it. And if it does then they were all on the five miles of hell trail.

They both look like they will need some TLC before they are really trail ready but the 200 has a pretty good price and looks like it needs less. I would lean toward the 200 based off the pictures alone. But you will have to see what it looks like in person. It looks like both of the bikes are missing skid plates so a good look at the cases would be worth your while.

Also when people are trying to sell you something they have a tendency to tell you what you want to hear. My bike takes a better picture then both of those and I can say for sure that it has been abused and beaten. But that is what I have it for. I could tell you it was only ridden in a flowery meadow on Sunday buy a little old lady looking for her lost kitten and that would be half true. I did ride it in a field with wild flowers and I did see a old barn cat but that was on a Saturday. So my .02 is to take what the sellers are telling you as a half truth at best in most cases.

No. I can't.

If I go with the 200 what "TLC" would you recommend to get it trail ready? Even stuff you can't see in the pictures i.e. just general items I should take care of before I take off.

Thanks for the feedback.

The thing that jumped out at me in the pictures is the chains look to be rusty. That to me is a sign that they were not maintained over all. If you buy one I would suggest you make sure the brakes work and the tires hold air, adjust the chain, clean the air filter, then take it out for a good hard day of riding and see what else it needs. Sometimes when a bike sits the joints will tighten up and feel tight. After a good ride then it will show it's true colors so to speak.

I don't want to sound like I wouldn't buy either one of them. But just by the pictures I would go with the 200. But I would like to try a 220 out at some point.
