KDX 250 not starting

Post by ArkAngel »

Hi Guys

Its me again.
I'm looking at buying this KDX 250 but cant get it to start.. But let me give you a bit of history and info about it first.
My friend had this bike sitting in his garage for a few month and i decided that i would like to buy it.
So i got it dropped off at my place and it was dirty and looks like it had not been looked after.
So what i done is put some petrol in it and started kicking, after a long while i got it started but when i revved the bike it sound like it was going to die or flooding..
i then went and bought some cleaner and washed the bike. I also noticed that the bike spark plug was a BPR6ESZ-N and the manual said that it uses a BPR9ES so i bought one and installed it.
I also cleaned the carb with some carb cleaner and washed the bike again. Then i noticed that the Fuel tap was leaking and went and bought a new one.
So after i installed the new tap and i made sure the carb is getting petrol i started kicking again and nothing.. i kicked my ass off.. LOL
So i decided to take the spark plug out and kick the bike to make sure it give some spark and it does.. I don't know what else to try..
The spark plug is making spark and the carb is getting fuel.. but still no joy.. it also feels like it has good compression and sounds like it wants to start but nothing

So if anyone can help me with this problem or give me some ideas to try it would be awesome?
My father in-law says i must get some carb start and spray it in there and it should start pretty damn quick and will burn out what ever is inside there.. lol

If you have spark and compression then it more than likely is a fuel issue.
When you pull the plug out after kicking it over with no start is the plug wet or dry.
You say you used some carb cleaner on the carb but did you actually remove the carb, disassemble and clean it thoroughly jets and all?
This should be done first especially if the bike was sitting for a period.
Have you looked at the air filter?

Yes, pull the carb, tear it down and clean it properly, sounds like fuel delivery is the problem. Then like is always said...clean filter, fresh gas, fresh oil, new plug before anything else. You might also want to take care of that shift lever.

projected tip on the spark plug?? Which exact model is it?

The carburetor will have to be cleaned at the very least.

Hey guys,

thanks for the quick reply's.
I did take the carb off and open the bottom ( 4 screws and the jet), and clean the jets. and cleaned and sprayed everything with carb cleaner.
When i toke the spark plug out it was wet.
I toke the air filter off and cleaned it, but also noticed a small tear in it, but managed to fix that. would that course the bike not to start also?
I put new petrol and a new spark plug in also. I put the same petrol i run on my KDX 200 in it.

Jason, quick question.. whats the projected tip on the spark plug? i just bought the one that the manual recommended.

Anything else that i can try tomorrow would be a great help?
If you guys think it is the carb i will take it off and give it a second clean just to be safe also.\

Thanks again
the help is always greatly appreciated :D

Did you take the jets out and clean them?

In the USA, we just have the off-road version. The stock plug is a B9ES (or BR9ES / R = with resistor in the UK or Canada, if I remember correctly).

Does this bike have a metal gasoline tank or a plastic fuel tank?

Is it an SR model??

Hi Jason,

I only saw one jet that i toke out and cleaned.
Yes as far as i know in south africa we only also got the off road version..
It has a plastic fuel tank and as far as i know it is not the SR model. It does not have markings that i can see that says SR on it.
But i could be mistaken.. the guy i want to buy it from does not worry to much as he thinks a bike has 2 wheels and off road tires, it must be a off road bike.. LOL hahaha
I did post the Frame number in an other post..

If it is not an SR model, please be sure you are mixing 2 stroke oil with your petrol. 32:1 gas to oil will be a good starting point. If it was run on straight gas, that could be a big problem. A proper compression test is probably in order here, despite what it "feels" like.

There are two jets in there , the pilot jet is in the hole in the jet block, that is the one you will need to clean. And I run a br7es plug in mine, works real well in tight trails. And a compression test would definitely help. a hole in the filter will not keep it from running, but I would replace it before I started riding it

I wonder if the reeds may be busted?
that could be preventing the fuel from reaching the cylinder

or, as mentioned, bad compression

Is that sealant around the head? Might want to check and make sure there's a head gasket in there!

What a POS jason??

I got it started. i toke everyone's advice and what it came down to was fuel mixture.. i must have mixed a bit more oil in the petrol for my KDX 200 because what i
ended up doing is getting 2L of petrol and mixing a 32:1 and it started on the 3rd kick.. when i got home from work i pulled it out the garage and 2nd kick it started right up..

The sound of it starting so quick made my day

But thanks for everyone's help and advice.. you guys are the wizards of the KDX world
