The first setting is correct. The second one is gonna bust your powerbands all to **** when you crank it down.

???
Basic fork maintenance with a little stem bearing re-grease and a damper oil change.
Why?

I hit it with 120psi to that 500ft/lb wrench. Nothing happened.
I must be doing something wrong............

Case splitter question.
Are you trying to get the upper triple clamp off?
Are these your 1999 KX forks?
Did you use Loc-tite on the spacer and stem??

Case splitter question.
I do believe he is just trying to pop your head and clog your valves leavin a wider gap with your inner rings.
If you cant fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem.

You have a good remembery, Jason.
Hhhmmm......Jason wrote: Did you use Loc-tite on the spacer and stem??
The spacer was machined and pressed into place by a local shop. He's not a 'glue it in' kind'a guy.. He has used Loctite when I have provided it and asked him to use it, as on the KDX stem in the KX bottom clamp. I don't recall it being used on the top clamp. I have had the stem out for steering bearing maintenance since it was first installed.
In any case, it (Loctite) was NOT used stem-to-spacer. That would be odd. Possibly it was used spacer-to-clamp.
It's ON there, though.
Ski suggested whanging the bars against the stops a few times. That's a good idea, I think. I had PB on it overnight, will try it later today.
Or...seeing as there isn't any reason to HAVE to take it off, I might just forget about it 'til 'next time'. The woods aren't closed...yet (fire season). Today, for example, is a PERFECT day to go riding.
Obviously, I have an electrical problem.

Re: Case splitter question.
I am used to a little twist back and forth, maybe some taps upward with a rubber mallet.
spacer to stem was my concern.
Maybe throw a 2x4 as a steering stop and whack the top one with an additional 2x4 to get it to spin?

Using a case splitter wasn't my first option.Jason wrote:I am used to a little twist back and forth, maybe some taps upward with a rubber mallet.
I'd already tried the twisting, tapping, TAPping approaches before I came up with, 'THIS oughtta work!!'
Got it.Jason wrote: spacer to stem was my concern.
I like that. Thanks!Jason wrote: Maybe throw a 2x4 as a steering stop and whack the top one with an additional 2x4 to get it to spin?

Re: Case splitter question.
I would think the way you had that case splitter set up as a puller, it shoulda popped it right off. Musta been a good tight fit!

Re: Case splitter question.
Just spray some WD-40 in the crevices around the bearings and go riding.
It being that stuck is pretty crazy!
Break out the propane torch and aluminum foil shields. I did that on stem swaps.

Case splitter question.
Try tightening down the jack bolt of the puller as tight as you can then hit the end of the jack bolt with a hammer. Often the shock of hitting it will get things moving.

Re: Case splitter question.
The shock idea is good.
I had tried that earlier..no joy.
BUT...it's all apart and back together now. Soaking in PB overnight helped. It took next to nothing to get it to move today. I shimmed the frame stops, tapped the top clamp and it moved. No 'broke free' to it..it just moved.
Put the bars in, moved 'em back and forth awhile. Eventually it came all the way off.
It was corrosion between the shim collar and the stem that stuck it. The stem was 'rusted'. I put it back together with anti-seize. It didn't fall back on...no loose fit going on there! The only room for the anti-seize to stay is from the now gone corrosion that was on the stem. Not much room.
I am surprised the collar stayed put.
That was fun!
Thanks for the input! Shimming the stops and using the bars to twist the assembly was very helpful. Thanks, Jason!
Does this mean I DON'T have a wiring problem?

Case splitter question.
hahahaa no need to be an ass man. Never really seen much of a prob with one or either one Ive had to do so far. So when looking at pic it just looked like you were making a joke in a sense just looked weird as in what you were doing? especially when following you had a whistling icon which indicates perhaps mischief.

Re: Case splitter question.
I am glad you got it figured out. Thank you for your thread. It was educational to me.
What is the shim material made of?
Is the shim/spacer sealed to the upper clamp, or is it a re-movable piece?
I like the anti-seize idea in this case.
You are welcome for any help I may have given. I guess looking back on it, it could only move up or rotate.
Yes, canyncarvr. No need to be an ass man. You could be a boob man.

Great! In which case, its purpose was served!Jason wrote:I am glad you got it figured out. Thank you for your thread. It was educational to me.
I did wonder. Couldn't tell. More exactly DIDn't tell.Jason wrote:

It is not removable in the sense that it does not easily come out. Wouldn't have had a problem in that case. It's pressed into the clamp. Whether the machinist used green Loctite (made for such a fitment AND what I provided for the stem/bottom clamp assy. I'll get you the product number if you're interested) I don't know. It certainly could be pressed out with a correctly fit arbor. I don't know the thickness of these spacers off-hand, around .030".Jason wrote:

Yeah...but it's the getting TO that point without breaking something that was the result I was glad to get to.Jason wrote:

Modified sweat glands? Not me! I prefer legs that go all the way up and make a spectacle of themselves.Jason wrote: Yes, canyncarvr. No need to be an ass man. You could be a boob man.
