Value of 2003 KDX220R from the original owner
Looking to see what I should offer a local owner of a 2003 KDX 220R. Original owner, great condition, anal about oil changes to trans and running quality stuff. I have looked at the bike twice, ridden once and all seems good. Located in Upstate NY and he is asking $2500. KBB says retail is about $1650....a bit low to me. From your experience, what is a reasonable offer? I am getting back into the sport after several years out, so I do not have a good feel for the used bike market.

$2500 seems high to me. I bought a 2002 220 last year for 1700 from the original owner, in perfect condition.

2000 is top dollar. Maybe 2500 if it has all the goodies you want already installed (ie: front end swap, pipe, forged piston, etc) and is in MINT condition. 1700 - 1800 is more in line with the going rate in most areas for your average 2000+ KDX, but it does depend on what KDX's are going for in your area. What do you turn up searching craigslist for other 200/220's?

Not many KDX's in my area to compare, most older ones that have the Monster Energy stickers on them......which is my book means tread lightly (if you know what I mean).
Any other thoughts on pricing?

one thing you really need to look into is the piston
the stock 220 piston has weak piston skirts and they are prone to failure without notice
if this bike is still running the stock piston you can knock a few hunderd off the price but if it has been replaced with a wiseco (or other aftermarket piston) it would add to the value of the bike
what state are you located in ?
pricing seems to vary per state

Thanks for all the good information.
I am in New York State and it is the original piston. Bike has about 500 miles on it. Orignal front tire and newer rear tire.
Any more thoughts on a asking price?

Re: Value of 2003 KDX220R from the original owner
I still go with 2,000 tops. I'd start out offering about 1800, and would not go over 2k. Fact is, it's worth whatever someone will pay for it, and it's not likely that anyone is going to shell out 2k - 2500 for a 10 y/o trail bike. You also have to remember, this bike did not change other than graphics/colors from it's release until it's last model. So the 2003 doesn't deserve a premium because it's a newer model. The only thing that should be considered in the price are condition, and modifications.

And on that bike stock piston and stock tires only means you still need to buy new tires and a new piston

I'm not sure where in NY you are but they seem to sit on CL for a long time around me for $1800 and less. There was one (late 90's 200) not too far from me that sat for over six months at $1200. The bike looked clean. Not perfect, but good. And they still had a very hard time getting it sold. If they even did.
