Bike starts ok when cold - after a bit of a warm up appears little to no compression when kicking
yet as little compression as there is - she will stall grab and start.

Yes......maybe Im used to 4 strokes - but this felt like nothing.

Regret Ive got no idea on the history of the bike

You need to run an actual compression test. Just spinning it over with your leg tells you very little.
The KDX has a long kickstarter too which makes it feel a lot easier to turn over than other bikes.
