CRANK SHAFT RESISTANCE AFTER SPLITTING CASES

If you have NEVER split the case and installed new crank bearing or seals on a 2 stroke engine DO NOT comment on this post.

I have a 2005 kdx200 stock engine. I replaced the crank seals and bearing due to a leaking crank seal on the trans side. I followed the manual and i now have the engine assembled but i have noticed the engine feels tight, meaning that it takes more force to spin the engine then it did before.

I can still spin the engine with my hand but there is a noticable difference.

The engine was running good before and had no problems, beside running rich from the seal leaking. Also the engine looked good during the tear down process.

I have NOT ran the engine yet.

My question, is this normal? Will the engine spin more freely after its been ran?

Did you use anything to hold the crankshaft in alignment during pressing (as shown in the manual)?

After I rebuilt the bottom end in my KDX I though it felt a little bit tight too. I chalked it up to fresh bearings and seals not being broken in yet.
Just double check to make sure you have equal spacing on each side of the crank and that your cases are meeting properly and you should be fine.

I double checked it and it looks right. Also i tapped the crankshaft end on the flywheel side with a dead blow (sugested by someone else) and it feels like its freeing up more every time i rotate the crank.

I may have missed it, but how did you get the cases back together? Did you do the oven/freezer method?

Froze the crank and heated the bearing on the trans side

Used the Tusk Crank shaft installer tool for the flywheel side

Case whent back together smoothly.

Already happened to me, if you can feel a resistance it means there's a misalignment somewhere ..the bearings won't last long...
If you decide to run it like that you'll have to be really careful about any "new noise" the engine will make.. It will tell you when it's time to reopen it again... :?

Yeah, sometimes the crank will be offset a little causing some binding on one case side or the other. Using the dead blow hammer to move it slightly will get it where you need it.

Check to make sure the lips of the seals didn't get distorted when putting it together. I had the lip of one of the crank seals on my '83 250 distort when pressing the crank in. The lip caught on the machined edge of the crank shaft and it was pulled almost inside out. I noticed it because the crank was hard to turn.

+1. Had that happen on my sons kx65.

I had to hit my 250 crank pretty hard to get it to move. Get a piece of wood that barely fits in between the crank and give the crank a good hit enough to move it in the case. Worked food for me
