why is my new kdx220 so fast?

Post by 559stan »

So i took a trade on my yz450 today. The guy brought over a kdx 220 and cash. I wasn't to excited as i already have a nice kdx 200. The 220 has a 2003 yz front end, large ims tank, pro circut pipe and sparky, new cases and cylinder, new 36mm carb. So i jump on thinking it's going to run like my kdx200 with a fmf pipe. Wow that thing is as fast as a 250mx bike. I short sifted and still it felt like it would loop over first through forth gear. This was going to be my buddy bike but he would kill himself on it. It has instant wheel lifting power that will help on the trail....ps i know what fast is and this thig is really FAST!

I feel the same way about my 220 hybrid. It is fast and fun.
I let my son ride it the other day and he commented that it was fast and he rides a yz450.
Check the tooth count on the sprockets. You could gear it longer to mellow it out. It will just go faster on top speed.

13/47 I think.
Quick & fast are two different things, imho. If you go back to stock gearing, it won't feel as quick but it'll be faster concerning top speed. I tried 13/51 & hated it. Too much shifting required in the woods & the front came up a little too often... as you've already discoverd.

Having the larger carb on the 220 does wake them up in the mid range..are you sure the carb is a 36mm?? if so from what bike?? ..normally the 35mm from the 200 is the usual swop.i have found that having too larger rear sprocket on the 220 is unnessasary due to the way the bike is tuned for torque unless you ride really technical single track trails, 1 tooth either up or down works well on this bike for most types of trails...you may find that the past owner perhaps had some kind of engine tuning done which would explain your bikes `get up & go`

The carb is new and the owner said it was a 36mm. The gearing is really low and a13/49 tooth would be about right as i do ride the tight stuff. This bike was a clapped out pig that a pro built for his buddy. That buddy changed his mind after $1,800 was spent on parts and a 2003 yz front end was installed. The fork set-up is cool with a stock yz lower triple with kdx stem and a applied racing upper triple clamp. It's topped off with some pro taper mid rise cr bars. The motor was shot and he bought new cases, cylinder, carb, pro circut platuim II pipe and sparky, large ims gas tank, works connection rad. braces. New water pump and radiaters, rear shock and a cycle works seat. New tires, chain and sprockets. The steering stop and front fender mount are custom machined. All i need now is a skid guard, pipe guard and some good bark busters. I'm pretty stoked over what i

13 front with a 48 or 49 is the best setup IMHO.
51 on the back will make it a wheelie machine.

Common carb saw is in fact a 35mm. Equally as common is having the carb bored to 36mm, and having some other tweaks done to the internals. This is what many people here use r-bdesigns for. The motor probably had port and head work done during the rebuld as well. There is no comparison to a stock 200 w/ pipe VS a 200 OR 220 with pipe, head work, port work, good reeds, and a modded carb.
