hey guys, as you might know i have a 96 KDX200 im looking to sell so i can buy a starter bike for the wife

i would prefer to get her a new TTR125, DRZ or KLX140 but someone just offered me a 98 and a 03 XR100
its a bit smaller then i would have hoped but ive heard good things about them
and, if they are both in good condition (im expecting them to be) i would imagine the pair is worth more then my KDX ?

How big, or small is your wife? Hips, waist, bust? Pics?

Would an XR100 be big enough for her? I mean frame wise not power wise.

What kind of dinner?

If you think she will fit the bike, or the bike will fit her then it might not be a bad trade.

From what I have seen, KDX's are great bikes that are hard to find (in good shape) and even harder to get ride of. so a trade for a pair of hondas might be worth it. I have no experience with XRs but some one else might have a better idea of what they are worth. "Kids" bikes tend to hold there value better then big "kids" bikes.

The xr's are great bikes. But at 5'5" I would think she's too big. My son is 5'5" and 110lbs and ride his buddies drz125l which is bigger than the xr an he was too big. He had an rm125 as his starter bike. I would think the kdx would be a decent starter bike for your wife

i know a the XR was mentioned a few times in this thread http://kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.ph ... ey#p113400
and it seemed to get good reviews

i've had her sit on the TTR125 which is a bit taller then the XR and she seemed to fit it well
the KDX is definatly too tall for her

i've had the KDX for sale for a while and plenty of offers with trades for full size smokers but nothing that really peaked my interest and no decent cash offers, this really is the first deal i would consider (might even be able to sell both XRs seperatly for more then i could get for the KDX?)

The xr's are great bikes. It will be down on power form the other bikes you mentioned but I would guess either way she'll out ride the suspension and power quickly. You can get links to raise the the swingarm and fork extenders. But after you pay all that might as well get the CRF150. That is really the bike I would get. It's a little bigger than the "L" bikes. But not full size. But she could ride it for alot of years.

All that to say you could most likely sell the xr's faster than the KDX. I can get them around here for $600-$1200 depending on age and condition. She could learn to ride and sell it then for a little bigger bike with more power.

IMHO the XR will be too small for her.
As for selling your KDX,sometimes you have to be patient, it took me over a year to sell my 1st one, the 2nd one took only 2 months...
I would not jump on the 1st opportunity that shows up especially since it won't fit your wife too well...you'd be stuck with 2 bikes to sell instead of 1.
just my 0.02

I bought a crf150f for my wife to ride. A short time later I bought the ttr125 with small wheels.
Questions are what riding conditions, experience, aggressiveness, etc.
My wife is 5'5" and found herself intimidated on loose conditions with the crf150f,, much more comfortable on the ttr125 where she could flat foot it.
My opinion is the xrs are an excellent beginning bike if that is where she's at. It can be discouraging if you can't handle the bike. Then get bigger as she becomes ready for the 50-60 ft whips.

Is lowering the KDX out of the question?

thanks for all the replies guys

her experience is absolutly zero...i think ive taken her around the block on the back of my sister FZR-600 and that has been the only time shes ever been on a bike

terrain will be picked accordingly, so i would start her out on flat grass or hard packed sand, then move up to seasonal roads and then...ORV trails
definatly nothing that would knock her off too soon

as for lowering the KDX, it would have to come down considerably...4 inches at least
(i guess i could put super motard rims on it but that just looks silly)
on top of that, even IF i could lower it to her height it would still be a very potent 2 stroke dirtbike and i would much rather start her out on a more docile 4 stroker

i tried lowering the kdx... no go. Even low enough so she could flat foot it, it was too top heavy for her to feel comfortable and be able to pick up.
That's why i got her a big wheel 125 ttr and she loves it. Forget about the small wheel at 5.5.

A girl I ride with that is probably around the 5'5" range had a CRF150R little wheel and did ok with it but when she stepped up to the 150R big wheel her riding improved instantly. The little wheel tended to get hung up too easy and get tossed around too much. The big wheel helped with all of that.

im not looking for a bike she can jump on and keep up with me, im just looking for a bike she can learn to ride on...starting, stopping, clutching, shifting...just the basics

I'd keep the KDX and get her something cheap. I'd be worried about getting her the perfect bike and she'd ride it twice and say ridings not for me.....

something cheap, yes but it's got to be somewhat adequate from the get go.
no sense in spending 500 bux on a bike she'll ride twice and realize she needs a bigger bike already...and be back to square one...
