Rear tire and sprocket combo

Post by bikdx »

My '94 has a 110/100-18 tire on it with a 50 sprocket. he sprocket is showing some wear now and the tire's knobs is starting to lose their edges. The previous owner put "the biggest tire that would fit" on it and upsized the sprocket to match. What was the original size tire and sprocket?Would I be better of with original or sticking with what I have? I do have to say that larger tire will sling some mud!

Rear tire and sprocket combo

Post by turtle »

I've been running stock gearing and rear tire on my 2004. Stock gearing for that model is 13T front and 47T rear. Stock tire is 100/100. It's hard to tell you if you'd be better off switching either one. In my case, I just switched to a 49T rear in hopes of that being a little more compatible with the type of trails I tend to ride. I don't know if I did the right thing or not yet. That's part of the fun, I guess.

Saw your intro post too. Welcome to KDXRider.net.

Thanks, turtle. I've been playing with the idea of going back with the original size tire and keeping the 50 sprocket. I don't ride hard enough to need a lot of top end so I figured that would give me more take off. However, an MX friend of mine said that'd be too much gear for the woods. :?

I am no expert, first off. But I suspect your friend is right - a 50T with 100/100 seems like it would be too geared down. There are lots of posts on this site if you do some searching. Check this board out:

i have one KDX with a 13/50 combo and one with a 12/47
the 13/50 is streetlegal and does a good job keeping up with trafic
the 12/47 is a trails bike and has WAY more grunt...not a bad thing to have on the trails
in the end the perfect gearing is a combination of bike, rider and usage
you make a change to either one of those 3 and your perfect ratio changes
