2001 KDX220 with 14/51 sprockets?

Post by burnsy »

Getting things ready for spring/summer riding. just going over the bike and noticed tooth count on sprockets. 14/51. Question i have is why this change was made? could see changing the rear sprocket, but confused as to why both sprockets. any one want to sign in.

little mods are slowly getting done. as of now 607 reeds, air filter & removal of lid, KX kickstarter (mucho better).

That combo will give you less "chain whip". But check out this site for more combo possibilities.. http://www.gearingcommander.com/

I believe stock gearing is 14/47. This gives a ratio of 3.36 to one, c/s sprocket to rear wheel. Gearing of 14/51 gives a lower ratio; 3.65 to one. Lower ratios provide more low speed torque at the expense of top end speed. Higher ratios provide less low end torque and the potential for more top end speed.

Stock gearing is 13/47. I don't know why they would go bigger on both ends. :hmm: Maybe the went to the 51 first and it slowed the bike down too much so the changed to the 14 to get a little speed back out of it with out having to replace the new rear sprocket?
