is fmf performance 2 stroke silencer packing just crap or what. i cant get the stuff to get into the ends of the silencer its bunched up in the middle.

I use about half the package of the pink stuff and wrap it snug. When inserted then it expands. My bike was just tested at last weekend's enduro and put out 88dB of sound pressure. Not too shabby.

thanks for replying ski but i stuck the whole package in. it wasnt that tight. but it just didnt seem right. im a newb at repacking so if the bike runs like crap i will just get the layered stuff.

You have a few (usually three) wraps of masking tape to hold it together?

I use the whole package..cut one piece long enough to fit the perforated pipe, that leaves a piece that's a bit shorter than the pipe. I split that and use it as another layer.

Wrap some tape around it (don't cinch it down of course..just enough to hold it to a diameter that will fit in the case), slip it in.

Kind of have to fuss sometimes with where the pipes meet inside the silencer. It's hard to tell if your straight or not...and you're trying to mate two pieces of pipe 16" or so away from where you have a hold of the innards.

My last db check was 88, too.

Oh...this applies to an FmF TCII for an 'H' model anyway.

the fmf stuff i was talking about wasnt layered. it was like a bag of fiberglass string. i just got some moose layered packing and used it. i will try the silent sport later.

silencer is a fmf powercore for an 'E" model. if anyone uses one of these what type and how much packing do you use just out of curiosity

I've always used steel wool in my FMF powercore on the 89. I've never had it db checked so I have no idea what its db is. I'll have to pick up some of the Silent Sport and give it a try.

The string stuff you're referring to in the FmF form is going to be similar to SilentSport...it's string, too.

It depends on how your S/A is put together. On the TCII, the perforated pipe is removed from the can. Obviously you cannot pack the can full of string (or anything else) and then put the pipe back in thru all that stuff.

So, you would have to try to wrap the core (the perforated pipe) with the string stuff and then fuss with getting it back into the can.

..which is where you got stuck, I guess.

If you can leave the pipe in the can (probably by removing the end cap), then you could just cram the string in and you'd be set.

I could likely do that with the TCII, but my preference is to simply remove the screws...not the rivets.

Besides, I have no complaint with the regular fiberglas stuff.

The point is (there is one belive it or not!), if you didn't like FmF string, I can't see that you would like SilentSport any better.

With some of the newer bikes you can get Silent Sport in a cartridge type deal

hey off topic but where can i find that jetting guide thing that i read about on the other site. i cant remember the fella's name and i cant find the bookmark. all i remember about it is that you needed excel and i didnt have it then.

Is the name brand stuff quieter than house insulation? I bought a roll of Owens Corning fiberglass with enough to do both my bikes 20 times each for $8. It seems to do an OK job.

I have used the 8 dollar a roll insulation and the expensive packing. I didn't notice any performance difference and without a db meter I haven't noticed a difference in the sound level.
