A question of sag?

Post by robkdx »

Hi All.

Ive got a 2006 KDX200. Ive read a lot about the suspension on the bike and I thought I better check my settings.

With me standing on the bike I get 100mm sag on the back but only 50mm on the front.

The bike has been well looked after and had a few mods so Im wondering if the fork springs have been changed. It doesn't ride like the fork springs are to soft but then again im new to trail riding and my last bike was a 82 XR200. I weigh 105kg so I would have thought if the fork springs are to soft I would have had much higher sag.

How do I tell what springs I have fitted? Are they marked?

Both those numbers sound in the right ballpark as far as setting the sag goes, but that doesn't tell you if it's sprung too soft, that just reflects the amount of preload applied to the suspension.

You need to check sag measurement with only the weight of the bike on the wheels, and the wheels off the ground and see if all the sag measurements are in spec

Sag with no weight seems to be 10mm each end. Is that ok?

Get to 100mm of rider sag while you are seated, not standing.

Here is a picture I took of a pro doing it.

Ive just checked the sag properly and found to my surprise I need to increase sag. So looks like my springs have been changed.

Fork static sag is 35mm and with me on 75mm.
Shock static sag is 10mm and with me on 85mm.

As im about 100kgs I find that surprising.

So for the forks, to adjust sag I should just cut the spacer back a bit at a time to get it right?

Adjusted the back to get 20mm static and 110 with me on it. Will see how that goes.

110?? Try 100mm. You HAVE to get it set to 100mm, THEN worry about free sag.
