Starting up your bike with the voltage regulator connected incorrectly (backward) will instantly fry your lighting coil. Best bet is to keep with same model type for best results as there was some work done with digital CDIs capable of retarding trigger timing, but most of that never made it to production.

I'm the guy with a $50 KDX CDI replacement. You can also fix your own if you have the patience of a saint to slowly dig out the parts from the hard silicone mixed with pebbles (maybe it's a Zen thing) to replace the SCR and main capacitor and diode connected to it.
