what boots to buy ?

Post by pumpguy »

I can't say anything about about brands, styles, price etc. but would like to add that most boots I've seen are smooth sole type for MX use. If your riding is mostly woods, enduro type, you would probably be better off with a lug type sole. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way by not considering this before I sprung for some nice swap-meet boots that happen to have smooth soles.

you are right, thats why i specifically choose the comp-5 off-road version
they have a sole i would compare to a working boot
there is a good shot here

still not as rough as i would have hoped but definatly better then the slipper type sole most MX boots have

Yup. That is one of the reasons I considered the AXO "Enduro" boots since they had a traditional hiking boot sole. It makes a heck of a difference when you like to explore a bit off the bike and in technical hike-a-bike situations. I might look in to those Comp 5 off road boots.

Doesn't having a lugged sole slow down the transistions time when shifting your weight on the pegs and shifting/braking? I guess if your pegs aren't really wide and sharp it wouldn't be too bad.

i have the stock pegs and it never bothered me
of course, i've only ridden with the lugged sole MX boots or my regular everyday working boots and so i might be quicker with a flat sole....i just dont know it

what boots/gear bag to buy ?

Post by rbates9 »

I have been happy with the other fly gear I have, but I can't say anything about their gear bags. But if your looking at that bag I would look here, http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/ ... y+gear+bag That extra dollar could go for a spare kick starter nut.

oh yeah, i forgot to add the chest protector in the list
it is in there, no knee braces or elbow gaurds though, dont have those...not going rollerblading you know ;)

im sure they would fit (there is still quite a bit of room even with all my gear) but i doubt it would still fit in my toolbox with knee and elbow gear

Re: what boots to buy...updated after breaking my ankle

Post by diymirage »

allright guys, big update
I had the comp 5s for about a half a year and I broke my ankle wearing them

http://kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=14865

im not sure if it was a fluke or bad luck or what but long story short, the comp 5s will get the boot and im back to looking for a new set of riding boots again

this time the price/protection ratio has shifted to where I don't care much about the price (just spend about 1500 in medical bills getting my ankle set so 400-500 for a pair of boots to prevent that from being a recurring bill seems reasonable)

so I guess now the question becomes, which boot gives the best protection ?

I used Alpineastar Tech10s for years while actively racing offroad events. I switched to Gaerne about 2yrs ago and will be switching back to Tech10s. More comfortable for me, but the Gaerne's were pricey enough that my wallet told me to muscle though them. Not bad, just not as comfortable. That said, both do their job and I have never had foot/ankle issues.

I have Gaerne SG10's, love them. My first ride in them was 70 miles of high speed dessert and they just got more comfortable as I rode. I came out of Comp 5s and they are WAY more comfy (while riding). I had a MAJOR toe kicker happen this summer, I found that hidden stump, while going around 30 on a trail, and kicked it so hard that my foot went PAST my rear wheel. I was able to stay on the bike, didn't feel the stump on my foot, just threw it off the peg and back. If I was wearing my 5's, I'm positive that I would have broke my foot. I am also (at any price point) a fan of the leather soled boots (stitched, not bonded) I just feel that that big chunk of leather will give more forward to back protection (like toe kickers).
I could never get my wide foot into A*s so have never even tried them.
Sidis are supposed to be real nice boots also, but again, not wide enough for my foot.
Then there is Forma, supposed to be an excellent boot also.

sully, how do the tech10s size out ?
depending on the shoe I wear either a size 13 or a 14 and im thinking a proper fit is crucial in providing proper protection

when I bought the comp 5s I tried on a 13 and a 14 at my local parts shop but I doubt anyone local will match this price
