Small water in oil problem

Post by Krod »

Hi All,

Went for a major ride yesterday, one KTM boiled over, and my bike was going strong until...drained the oil and:

I hope its a water pump seal! So I have started to take the bike apart...

Should I be looking anywhere else? Not excited about this job! :(

Small water in oil problem

I bet you will find the water pump seal is bad. But the worst part will be getting all the milk out of the transmission.

Quite right! I guess the best option is to fix the seal... refill the oil and run and replace(and repeat)?

Also, not so sharp on how to check the seal, so I am getting the Kindle edition service manual off amazon now, hope that will help! If there are any articles on here where this has been done before I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

BTW, the Cyclepedia service manuals for the KDX200 are complete rubbish IMO!

Small water in oil problem

I'd run a couple quarts of ATF through there to clean it out after. Doesn't even have to be type F just whatever's cheapest. I think you'll be ok, only thing that MIGHT warrant some attention would be the clutch.

My first problem is to replace the water pump seal and it looks like this engine was never opened, so all the gaskets just came apart, will that liquid gasket stuff do the trick?

A gasket is better, but you can get by with silicon gasket maker on the side cover.

Why do you say that? I am quite impressed with them vs the factory service manual.

I thought they would be very detailed, but they just give okish pics and not much description, but perhaps I am not looking in the right places, I just looked at replacing the water seal.

Oh, and put the whole baby back together, using crappy 10W40 in the gearbox at the moment for the rinse, will put the motul back after a ride or so :)

Erm, ok, so now, after a few rides, the oil is milky, but the radiator still full?

Residue or a small leak?

How much water do you need to turn oil milky?
