Kdx 20 c1 not much power

Post by Propainrage »

Hi I've just joined the site and only just bought this 1987 200 c1 with kips valve
On buying the bike I thought it was a bit under powered so I pulled the head to find
The boar in a bad way so new noicocil coat and piston and ring later ... Bike still
Feels under powered , I rode one of these back in the 90s and i seem to remember it being
A fast machine like on the back wheel fast !! any thoughts on this would be great thanks
And hello everyone

Try to be a little bit more descriptive with the low power. When does it occur? Low range, Mid, Up top?
Could be anything from jetting to a sticky Kips valve. If the power falls off up top its probably your kips valve being gummed up.

It makes all the right noises like it revs out in every gear I've had the power vavle out and cleaned , I did notice there was play in the main shaft that comes out the head as in we're the seal/ bushes are but the teeth on the valves and the shaft were ok and it moves in and out fine , I didnt feel there was a problem with clutch but I got one with bike so I changed that , the only other c1 I rode came up 1st 2nd just of the power were as this you have to clutch in 1st like maybe a 125

To be honest I'm not happy with the carb / float situation that's not the whole problem
But I don't think the kehien carb that's on there is helping , real dog pile to setup ie float
Any suggestions on an alternative ?

If you want a better carb, get a PWK35 off the later 200cc water cooled bikes. I can't remember what is involved in swapping them out but it has been done and documented somewhere on this forum.

Yes, the carb could be the entire problem, however, you should rule other things out. Now, to eliminate things that could be a problem, check all of these.

Cylinder pressure within spec? It doesn't matter one bit that it is new. A compression test will let you rule it out as the problem.
Air filter clean?
Intake manifold good?
No warpage or cracks/chips in the reeds?
No air leaks anywhere?
KIPS valves properly timed?
Have you checked the timing to see if it is stock or has been changed?
Silencer clean and freshly packed?
Pipe not plugged up?
Vents on the carb not plugged?
Stator output within range?
Have you double checked and cleaned all ground connections to the chassis?

I'm sure I'm forgetting something to check but if you answer all those questions we can help you get it figured out.

SS's post is excellent (crank seals also come to mind).

I am also curious about this Keihin carb. The C1 comes with a Mikuni.

Thanks for the info guys It's not an academic
Guess but I tried my carb of my old husky yesterday and even though
It didn't rev out ( not jetted right ) there was loads more power ... That 1st 2nd power I
Had remembered :-) I was thinking maybe worn and dragging in to much air so straight on the phone today
And ordered brand new mikuni and at £ 90 all in jetted .. Spotted carbs on eBay s/hand
£100 with bids on and days still to go ! So well chuffed
With that , also ordered crank seals £14 at that price ! rather than get stuck on a trail
The only thing I would like to change motor wise is the power valve makes a fair but of clunk
Is this normal ? I've looked around and can't find any new any ideas ?
Also mag puller anybody got one of these for sale ?
After that today though well excited to get the old girl out
For a bit of mud pluging ;-) . I also do Twinshock racing ! so everybody's
Got old bangers there but with the enduro lads I go out with they all
Got modern stuff ( ktm 530s ) and suttch like so can't wait
To show em you don't need a new bike to have fun :-) .

Kdx 20 c1 not much power

In the USA, 1986 and 1987 KDX200's came with a Mikuni. Unless someone has put a 1988 KDX200 specific Keihin carb on your bike, you may have had some previous owner put on an incorrect carb.

Yes you guys might be right about the carb
And the bikes like 26 years old so there's a good chance it's been
Botched somewhere along the way , after the info it's made me put the right carb
On so I've ordered a mikuni

Are you aware that it is not a normal Mikuni? It is with a choke lever, not knob.

Yes it's due to the air box mikuni only have choke circuit that side and just send lever
Over the carb body

If the keihin has an oval slide it's a PJ, which was never fitted to a KDX200. Not that it couldn't work. A PWK from a newer KDX would be a great improvement over OEM Mikuni VM or a PJ, and a closer to turn-key jetting baseline could be provided in this case.

Well, actually there is a D-series. The '91-'94 KDX250's were D-series bikes. Just saying!

Some of the non-USA models are a "D" when referring to what was a "C" model in the USA. D AUS models have a battery, for example.

Ok it's just in the Kawasaki book I've got it lists one as a c and the other a d model
I'm trying to source power valve parts I want the bushes and the shaft that goes in the head
Any ideas I've looked around and spotted one secondhand but this was complete apart from
Bushes
