setting rear shock preload

Post by KDXsg »

Hi, I have recently changed out my 92 SR model stock 4.6 rear spring to a KX250F 5.0 rear spring to balance off with my 2005 KX125 front end. I weigh 150lb w/o gear and 175lb with gears on.

with the 5.0 spring : 100mm race sag
35mm satic sag
the bike feels out of control in tight section of the trail, feels softer but hasher than with the stock 4.6 spring. I had with the same setting with the 4.6 spring but why is this so. I thought that with a heavier spring, it should be the other way round.

I have tried to decrease race sag to 80mm, and satic sag to 25mm. it felt much better. handleing is also improved. when pressed on the footpeg, at least the front fork is able to compress a bit.
should I increase the spring preload more for better handleing?

I do believe you have over-sprung your rear. That 4.7 was probably good for about 180-200lbs. The 5.0... wow. I'm not surprised it feels harsh.

You are probably too stiff on both ends now.
