Fuel petcock advice

I took the petcock out of my tank last night and was very shocked to see the amount of crud built up on it. I have flushed my tank a few times but never taken the petcock out. It looked as though someone had emptied the catcher of the mower in there. Well maybe not that bad but it looked like very fine grass clippings. In addition there were quite as few little black chucks of god knows what and some ?RED? plastic shavings. I can only guess the red came from a new plastic fuel can. I just thought I'd let everyone know just in case they haven't checked the condition of there tank and fittings. Oh I pulled the tap out and cleaned quite abit of gunk out of there also. It now operates alot smoother. Also check the condition of the o-ring behind the tap, mine was still good thank goodness.
