Pipe Dent

Post by terminatr »

My bike ran into a tree. Now there's a big dent about 1" deep on the pipe. I am thinking
about drilling a hole, using a slide hammer to pull out the dent, and welding the hole
closed. Would that work? Thanks! :please:

you can try the dry ice method, or the torch method. I've tried both on mine, the torch worked better for me but I had to polish out the burn marks

I wouldn't worry too much about that dent. IMO it is not big enough to noticeably affect performance.

If you want to fix it I think the best way is to take the pipe of and go to the hardware store and find some rubber plugs/caps/clamps that you can use to tightly seal both ends. If you use a propane torch and heat the edges of the dent the gas expanding in the pipe will push the dent out.

I would not drill a hole in the pipe. They can be a problem to weld back up as they are very thin and have a lot of oil build up.

Or, since you ride a 220, take that woods pipe off and put a desert pipe on?

Why? What is a "desert pipe"?

The consensus is that on a 220 the Wppds pipe (what you have) does next to nothing, while the desert pipe really wakes it up withou losing bottom end.

That dent will not affect performance one bit so don't worry about it. http://motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/4413.aspx

Well, I don't need more top end. I just putt putt on the trail. Just trying to not fall behind the group too much.

What I need is a super strong pipe that don't dent!?

I really don't know how I dented that pipe. I ran into a tree, but I don't think the tree could have done it.

Pick up one of the DG pipes. I hear they are a lot thicker than the FMF or PC pipes. Then add some armor to it and you shouldn't get dents easily. However, like I already said, the dent really won't affect anything. If you look at the pics of my bike you will see it dented in the same spot, only worse, and I chose not to replace it on my build. I can honestly say that my bike runs like a scalded cat and has plenty of top and bottom end with a very powerful mid range.

It adds character!

You can pop it yourself, but you risk damage either to the pipe or your body. You can send it off to be fixed but that costs money.

It's a dirt bike, keep up with your maintenance and respectfully beat the crap out of it. If you are worried about keeping it pretty you aren't having as much fun! :supz:

Yep. Everyone has seen the pics of my recently completed bike. I went all out making it look as nice as it runs. I have already ripped the seat and scratched every panel on it! It IS a dirt bike after all!
