Is my cylinder done?

Post by treedodger »

Hi all,

so first post here...

I'm tearing down my 2003 KDX220R to replace piston, do some RB carb mods, replace pipe and reeds. on the tear down, I noticed some very slight scratches on the cylinder exhaust that arnt deep enough to put a finger nail in really. what caught my attention is right above the main exhaust port, the plateing (? I'm guessing plating) looks like its flaking off. The discoloration in the pic is what ever non-shinny metal is underneath. the piston looks surpirsing good on that side, so does everything else.

suggestions? clean/hone and run or do I need to replate?

Thanks

Replate my man. The new plating will be much stronger than the elecrofusion kawi uses.
The metal underneath is aluminum.

Clean the cylinder with a scotchbrite pad and WD 40 first. You'd be suprised how much better your cylinder will look. However, it still might need to be replated. Clean first though to get a better look.

Ok, thanks guys. I'm now in for more than I hoped for. I'm removing the kips to get ready to send cylinder off, how does the middle exhaust flap come out? All else removed. Also, any recommendations on replating? I'm already sending some stuff off to Ron black on Monday, but looks as if he only does resleaving.

I notice a lot of people on here go with Langcourts for a replate.

I used Millennium. Took 2 or 3 weeks due to some equipment being down. $180.00 if I remember correctly.

ok - she lives! bike back together, 2nd break in round down. still no tell on the performance, during break in yet. I went with Millennium Technologies on the replating. good folks, spec'd it up to the weisco no problem. They held my order 1 day because they said it failed quality control. I said, "thanks for checking, I'll wait 1 day to get it right". they shipped when they said, repairs look good, cranked right up. Also went with desert pipe, super stock reeds, and ron black carb and head mods. man, cant wait to run this - I might have to put tape on the seat.
