Jetting info

Post by chippy »

I took a few rides on my "new to me" KDX 200 and have decided the jetting is a little fat. I tried to drop the needle, but found it already in the first clip position. I had some main jets on hand and went ahead and dropped from a 158 to a 152. I would like to know what you folks are running.

Here is my info:
2006 KDX 200
FMF Gnarley Gold, stock carb
Main: 158 (now 152)
Pilot: 45
Needle: 2AFKQ - 1st clip pos. (all the way down!)
Spark plug: NGK BR8ES
Gearing: 12 / 47
Altitude: 3000 - 7000 ft.
Temp: 50 - 90 degrees F.
Mountain single-track riding, need clean bottom end pull rather than top-end over rev.

Any Thoughts ? ? ?

Changing the main jet won't affect your bottom end pull. You need to tinker with the pilot circuit. Try this:

The pilot circuit is pretty close (sets at 1 1/4 turn out), it's the needle where I notice the most "blubbering". My jetting seems rich all the way around from 1/4 thottle on up. I was wondering what main jet other folks were using for this combination at a similar altitude. Also, I have no idea where this needle fits as far as rich or lean as compared to stock? Maybe it is stock ? ? ?

I am pretty close. I just want to fine tune for our riding style and area.
It's been awhile since I rode a two-smoke. I must say the carb is much easier to adjust than my CRF 250x !

if it helps at all, I run a CGK needle and I get good power down low. granted I'm not "perfectly" tuned either and still working things out, but a lot of people run this in their bikes and love the results. this will help you out:

Ok, I'm confused.
Here are the other numbers on my needle: R1174K.

Any idea where this fits on the chart?

The 1174k would be a kawasaki part, manufactured by keihin. However, I don't think it's stock for any E or H KDX. If you look below the chart above, you'd need to convert your needle to the Keihin equivalent to place it in the chart. Instructions are there.

If you're interested in switching to a different needle, CEL or DEL would be a good start. They are richer overall than what you have, but seem to have a better profile for the KDX. You'd generally need to go down on pilot and main a size or two when using one of these.

I rode it last night and it ran pretty clean with the 152 main. It really helped clean up the mid-range. I just don't like running with the needle dropped all the way down as it leaves very little room for adjustment. I would like to have the same basic taper, with 2 more clip position grooves on top! Then life would be good with my KDX !
All in all, she rides pretty good right now!

Shim it with a washer or two.
Elbow grease contains no trans fat!

Thanks for the help guys.

KDXrider1989 was right.
Though things improved dropping the main (all the way around), the fine tuning was in the pilot. I am now running a 40 pj, 152 mj, and moved the needle clip to the 2nd position. She runs much stronger (and cleaner) in the bottom end!

Float level looks good.
I was just real nervous about running the needle all the way down. (especially a "lean" taper as I now know)
This is the circuit where 80%-90% of our riding occurs.
Thanks again!
