Bent spoke

Post by terminatr »

Is it okay to hammer straight a bent spoke and reuse it? The thing was bent by like almost 90 degrees, well beyond its elastic limit.

I wouldn't.
For all the trouble involved in dismounting a wheel and tire I'd put a new one in.

I've also run with a few broken/missing spokes with no ill effects......

They are pretty expensive, like $7 a piece. Just saying.

Spokes are designed to bend and stretch and move. They carry a lot of pressure on them and work as a system.
If you try to reuse that bent spoke it will be a weak link and have a much greater chance to fail.

Having said that, I ran my old dirt bike with like 3 spokes missing on the front and about 5 on the back. The rear would get out of true after about 20 minutes of riding and started breaking more spokes.

If you are going through trouble of removing the tire and getting at the spokes anyways, you might as well just replace it.
You don't necessarily have to buy "KDX 200 spokes". Just get any spoke that is the proper length, has the right bend at the hub, and is preferably close to the same thickness as the old one.
You will most likely need a new nipple with the new spoke though.
