Loosing Coolant

Post by asmed12345 »

I don't remember exactly when it began, but each ride when I return home, my coolant is depleated greatly. I havn't noticed it leaking anywhere but maybe it has when i'm riding. Has anybody else had this problem? I know coolant is a closed system so I shouldn't be loosing it which worries me. BTW its an '02 KDX 200.

If you have no water in your trans then you are probably losing it through the radiator cap. You probably just need a new cap. I had a similar problem due to high temps because of the auto-clutch/AZ heat so I replaced the standard 1.1 cap with a 1.6 and no more coolant loss.

If you have your bike jetted a little lean then it may be getting hot and pushing it out the overflow as well. After a good hill climb or a tight spot pull off and see if the overflow tank is flowing. Another thing could be a head gasket.

How bent up are your radiators? You could have a split seam or a broken row. Get a pressure tester and look for the leak. You could rent one at an auto part store for cheap. Also if it's a decent size leak there should be a stain/grime build up from the coolant.

Seriously? Or don't you have a recovery bottle?

I don't have a recovery bottle and have never needed to add coolant during a ride. The only time I have lost coolant was when my water pump seal failed a year before the rebuild and once since the rebuild running it hard with Dyna Ring. Both were easy fixes, a new seal for one and a 1.6 radiator cap for the other.
