Picked up a used frame

Post by amstel78 »

I bought a bunch of parts on eBay and one of them happened to be a complete 1989 KDX200 frame. I'm picking it up on Saturday but have a question about the right engine guard (the one that protects the water pump but is on the left side of the frame in the photo below). In the photos it appears bent upwards and I think might come into contact with the water pump housing. If so, I suppose I could have someone cut it off and reweld it back on at the proper angle. Either way, I only paid $39.00 for the frame so I'm not too concerned.

Here are a few pics; perhaps you guys could tell me if it's bent too far or if it's supposed to be like that? The right engine guard on my KDX200 in the garage I believe is level to the left side.

FWIW, I also picked up a complete odometer drive and cable, triple clamps and stem, engine kill switch with wire, crank case halves (left and right side with bearings), cylinder head, front dampers in excellent conditions with perfect OEM seals and boots, clutch perch with lever, and rear brake lever. Together with the frame, I spent about $140.

As long as it clears the water pump housing, I'll be fine with it the way it is.

Picked up a used frame

Trial fit the engine. If it interferes with the water pump, heat both sides of the hoop near the frame with a torch and beat it back down into position.

Good idea. Didn't think about that. Would a regular propane torch be sufficient should I need to move the hoop?

Looking at the pics more closely, I'm wondering if that's the way the frame came from the factory? It'd take a pretty hard knock to bend that hoop and I'd imagine that even a coat of paint wouldn't be able to hide the resulting damage. I'll know more on Saturday when I actually pick up the frame.

My 91 doesn't look like that either. Oh well. Frame cost me 40 bucks and that's something that can be fixed fairly easily. Seller did state though that the engine cleared the frame just fine when he was stripping the bike. We'll see...

I can see the kink, about an inch from the frame at the top part of the gaurd, in the third picture.
