mix question

Post by valleyguy »

Just got a new to me 89 kdx 200, the motor was just rebuilt and I was wondering what mix ratio I should use. He said he was mixing it 32:1 which seemed a bit off. What should I run to get me in the ballpark? Should I switch it after a few rides to a different ratio?

mix question

I'm guessing everybody will recommend 50-1 with a quality oil.
I would agree with that, unless you're really running it hard, then mix richer accordingly. I think Maxima has the best guidelines for this http://www.maximausa.com/tech-tips/oil-migration.php

In my '90 I run 32:1 using Maxima 927. There is no way in hell I would run 50:1 here in the desert heat plus I need all the power I can get. Just remember, more oil, more power, more protection for your engine.

I was told to run a non synthetic until break in and then I could switch to whatever I wanted after, any truth to that? Also how many tanks should break in take? Thanks everyone for the quick responses.

I don't believe in the non-synthetic stuff for "break in". Use what you like. IMO, break in is getting the bike up to temp and then riding it like normal. That is exactly how I broke in my fresh engine. The rings are the only part that needs to break in and it will happen quicker if you ride it like normal instead of babying it.

That's what I run in my race bike at 32-1. People tell me they love it when I'm on the track, because it smells so good. I tend to agree.

It was a few years ago that I remember this coming up, but I thought most of you guys were running Interceptor at 50-1. IMO, 50-1 is fine for trail, and recreational riding. There's a local pro level woods guy that's been running opti at 100-1 for years, and swears by it. I'm going to try it, but maybe at a safer 75-1. Most of my woods riding is at low RPM anyway. That's why I have the KDX :supz:

I run 32:1 because of the intense heat here in AZ plus I ride on the pipe quite a bit. I'm hard on my KDX's!
