Clutch Problems

Post by ArkAngel »

Hi guys,

i am new to the hole bike thing.
But i bought myself a 1990 KDX 200 and started having some clutch problems, so i was told to open the gearbox and check the clutch plates and friction plates.
but when i did found that there was 2 clutch plates next to each other. So it was one Friction plate and then 2 clutch plates then 1 friction plate again.
Can anyone confirm this? i thought it was 1 friction plate then 1 clutch plate etc.
How may friction plates and clutch plates must there be in the gearbox?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome. Yes, the steels and friction plates should alternate. I think there are 7 friction plates?

interesting

doesnt sound right to me BUT ive never opened the KDX so who knows
( i have had some experience with other bikes though and i have NEVER seen a set up like this)

what comes to mine is a story from my younger days
i was 16 and i rode a suzuki (forgive me fellow greeners) TSX 50 cc enduro
i had developed some damage to the block and had bought a donor block to fix it
the guy helping me was an expirienced rider and engine builder and he thought it was a good idea to combine the two clutch setups
(since we replaced the 50 with a big bore 70 kit and added a bigger carb and better pipe we needed a way to get the extra power to the ground)
i want to say we took one friction plate and one clutch plate out of the one block and added it to the stack on the other block

maybe someone tried this in your KDX and failed?

i think a good place to start is get us a count on what plates you have, how many frictions and how many clutches, then the experts can chime in and tell you if your on the money and just missalinged or missing parts or what...

It may be 8 friction plates and 7 steels. Been a while since I've had my clutch open.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick reply's.
I just counted the Plates and its 7 Friction to 7 steel ones.
I did read somewhere that it should be like 7 of the one and 8 of the other, but just wanted someone to maybe confirm that for me?

I think this maybe correct, because on both the steel friction plates that are together have markings of a friction plate on them.

Looking in my MANUAL it shows two diagrams 1 exploded view and one with the clutch pack assembled. They both show a steel plate first and ending with a friction plate on the outside under the JADA springs.
