look what I picked up today!

Post by scheckaet »

Another project on my hands
Image
the good:
I only paid $425 for this 01 220 :supz:
plastics, tires (brand new rear), cables, bearings, chain and sprocket all look very good
FMF pipe and silencer (wood) no dent
no signs of rust
acerbis barkbuster
doesn't look like it was ridden too hard

the bad:
blown top end
220 cylinder is seriously gouged up and it'll cost a bit too much to fix (weld, strip, replate...)

I went for it for a few reasons:
1 cheap
2 great shape
3 I already have a used cylinder and head from a 200
4 needed a winter project (well kinda  )

Problem:
I forgot I needed a 200 carb instead of this punny 220 carb :?
Anybody got a working 200 carb they want to part with?

More later

looks like the head is useable

Piston carnage: this looks like a stock piston...
the clip holding the wrist pin was encrusted in the piston side according to the owner.

so the story on good ol'girl is that I'm the 3rd owner.
The 1st owner (rather old) was using it riding around on their pasture, not ridden hard.
The 2nd one was a 14-16 years old kid, the dad took care of it, changed air filter, oil...never replaced the piston. "t'was runnin great, very strong motor for the past 2-3 years, then about 6 months ago, out of the blue: kaboooom"
I'm convinced the skirt broke 1st, then a piece got lodged somehow around the wrist pin and knocked the clip out. the rest is history.

220 owner: let this be a warning for you.
Here is a quick estimate of the cost and this is IF the bottom end is not ruined:

cost of doing JUST the top end (like we all recommend on this site... )
gasket kit: $19.99
piston kit: $126.99
wrist pin bearing: $12.99
coolant
total: about $160

Add this if your piston grenades cuz you didn't believe or didn't want to replace the OEM 220 piston:
Strip, Plate, Hone: $179
Weld/Machine: $50
total: IF YOU ARE LUCKY add another $230
if you're not: add bottom end rebuild...even more $$$$$

So please, CHANGE YOUR STOCK 220 PISTON NOW!!!

The A/S carb is not OEM on the KDX. Some consider it a step up from the OEM as it is supposedly less sensitive to jetting and provided better low end response.

BTW, great deal on the bike! :supz:

the 200 ( 35mm ) carb works well on the 220 & doesnt take away any of the low end grunt that the 220 is famous for, i needed to install a larger main jet 155 but kept the 220 slide/ needle & clip possition the same as before..the onlty mod i made was install x3 `uni filters` in the airbox lid but removed the actual foam inserts..you could just drill x3 large 1inch holes instead.

I have a 97 220 with a 200 top end and 33 mm carb. 145 main jet and stock exhaust. I can't tell you how it goes yet 'cause I'm still working on it. PO was a long time enduro rider and dealer mechanic. He used it that way for several years so hopefully this combination will work for you too.

I guess I could try to run the 220 carb and jet it to see how it works. :hmm:
Anybody else tried that before? I'd guess it would be rather weak on the top end though.
I'd just rather do it right the 1st time if I could though.

Be sure and check the cases closely.
Both 220 grenade victims I have purchased have had pieces of the case broken out under the crank.
It's usually fixable. You probably should change the crank bearings anyway.

I want to find this late of a model KDX. This is just the entry point and price I was originally considering before I started thinking to go with a running KDX and paying a bit more. Did you score this on Craigs?

I wondered about the bottom end, don't know if I will split the case or not, probably should. :?
Might be a good learning experience I guess.

Yes I did find that on craigslist. This is the 1st-2nd time in the last 6-7 years I've seen one go for this low. I wasn't even looking for a project, just happened to check CL to see what was on there...pure luck.

I do belive that it is. They didn't have much info on the web site so I was going to give them a call to see what it comes with for a slide, ect.

$20 less and you could get the non air striker also.
