The next "Slick Nick" Rebuild Project (Pics inside!)

Post by Slick_Nick »

Sold "Project TTR: Buck Twenty Five" tonight, those of you who followed along know what that was all about. http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/962731 ... msearch__1 Made a handsome profit on that one, so with cash burning a hole in my pocket, I went shopping for my next project. I found TWO KX 125's for $1200 CAD and loaded them up.

The '93:

In rough shape. Missing plastics, the front brake is fubar, the tires are shot, and there is more play in the suspension than there is in stock KDX forks! (You'll get it if you've ever owned a KDX) The frame is straight, the plastics are tweaked as are the bars, and it leaks gas, But hey, it runs!

The '98:

It's what you'd call a "basket case". Everything is there, but this bike is literally in a box. The frame is straight, (it's white, &%$#@!???!) And the suspension is a full Pro Circuit Works setup. The engine has all the parts, but it's in a box. The cylinder is sleeved, but it's in great shape, so is the head. It will need a crank, the old one died from exposure to the elements. It looks like someone tried to make an FMX bike out of it, the seat is shaved down, and there's grab handles cut into the air box it looked like.

What a disaster. But, at least as far as I could tell, everything is there. Rads, carb, engine, plastics, levers, it's all there.

Yes, these bikes are a disaster but that's why I bought them. This is what I do for fun, and these should prove to be an interesting project that will keep me busy for quite some time!

The plan is to get the '93 done, and sell it or keep it as a buddy bike. Both bikes will get the full "Slick Nick treatment" but the '93 will be a little more conservative. The '98 I am going to go all out on, every nut and bolt will be upgraded or replaced, and I will keep it along with the KDX as my track bike. Look for build threads for each respective bike in the coming days, but for now thought I'd just post up my new aquisitions and gather some info.

I'm looking to the TT community to fill me in a bit. Any major issues or things to look out for on these years? I kinda just bought them on a whim, I had no time to do any research. Thanks!

Is this an aftermarket basket? The Plates look brand new!

The head. RB will work this over so I get a bump in compression:

Just a PV cover, or did PC do this engine?

Carbon reeds and what looks like a ported air boot?

PC Platinum pipe. I'll fix the dent:

New rads are in order. At least the right one anyway, it's got lots of holes:

Carb. What's the plug for on the side?

Image

Crank is seized. Cranks are hard to find, I will have this one rebuilt with a new rod.

You can see the forks used to say Pro Circuit and Braking:

The forks, triples, swingarm, linkage, chain guard and rims have all been anodized gold:

Wow, lots going on there. I have no idea what is up with that carb. Very strange. The rest of the 98 is quite interesting. Cylinder is sleeved. I wonder what it measures out to? Clutch basket looks aftermarket. What in the world has been done to that head??!

I got a 94 in the shed torn down. If you come up needing any parts, give me a shout. Most everything is there and good.

The carb I found out that plug is for the "Power Jet" that came on '98 and up models.

The head will be replaced for sure. I will PM you over on TT with regards to some '93 parts!

So I'll probably never use it then. When do you ever go WFO and rev out a 125?

I'll be stripping all the gold off. Both bikes will have a sonewhat "stock" look to them. Stay tuned to each thread of course for details.

The gold wheels look nice, but also look a lil faded from sitting in the sun

I wouldn't think so or every 2-stroke would come like that.

Still I would give it a try, even if it was for a few minutes to see if you can notice any difference.
