How do I know if I have a Wiseco?

Bought a 97 kdx 220 so I could ride with my 7yr old. Very good condition. Has the FMF pipe/Turbinecore silence. That appears to be the only mods. Is there a way to see if it has the stock vs Wiseco piston without removing the whole jug? And if I did lift the jug, how would I tell? Previous owner is in single track heaven.

Thanks for the input.. and where can I find an owners manual w/ supplement for under the $80 ebay price?

Welcome to the forum!

At some point in time, Wiseco pistons came with laser scribed info on the top. Maybe you can get cafty with a light and taking the spark plug out, but you may be having to take off the head.

The service manual is around $60 MSRP last time I checked. www.ronayers.com usually has them for 10% off that. I bought my supplement manual from them, and it was around $9.

ART makes the pistons for Kawasaki. You can see ART in the casting underneath the piston head. Not what you wanted to hear but... You can take off the head and scrape off the carbon on the piston and look for the wiseco part number on top of the piston.

Usually, if I am going to go so far as to dis-assemble the top end, and take a look, then I am going to pop in a new piston anyway. Whenever you buy a used bike, you really have no idea how long that piston was in there, what kind it is, what oil mixture it was run at, or how it was treated, so you are better off installing a known part, and resetting your historical knowledge base to zero. I got my manual for 2006 KDX200 through Kawasakipartsnation.com...Cheapest I could find. And, I am a big fan of RonAyers.com.

This shows $26.56 plus whatever they charge for shipping for 1997 KDX220 service manual.

You don't need to take the whole top-end apart, just pop the head. Drain 'some' coolant, pop head, look for wiseco numers on top, if there reinstall head. If not there, pull top end down and put one in there...LOL.

The one wibbens posted looks to be a Wossner, not a wiseco.

Wiseco has the W on the wrist pin boss.

Thanks everyone for the response. I'll be doing a complete overhaul this winter including new piston, maybe RB carb and lubing up everything on the rear suspension.
