Hi. I replaced the stock KDX-220R spring with an Eibach 892.0048.0. The round piece of metal that holds up the spring is too small for Eibach. The Eibach has constant diameter, but the stock spring is tapered at the bottom. The spring doesn't fall out, but it can move side to side on the guide. Each side has about 3/32" (0.1") of free space. I can't find an adaptor for it. Do you think it is okay for this amount of freeplay in the spring?

Are you sure the spring is not tapered? Have you tried flipping it upside down?

Did you buy it used or new? I have had Race Tech springs and they came with an adapter.

Yes I tried up side down. Yes Racetech's comes with adaptors. I should have bought Racetech. But too late.

I just realized the part number is slightly different from what I ordered.

I ordered: 892.0048.1
I got: 892.0048.0

I don't know if the last digit is significant.

Is there a code painted on the side of the spring?

Look at the 1989 - 1994 KDX200 shock's parts diagram to see if it has an additional adapter. I am thinking it does have one.

I am assuming the bike you have is 1995+.

I used a large flat washer (1-1/2" ID ?) from an industrial supply store and ground it to fit to increase the surface area. The washer is just flat but the spring stays in place.

I remember my old 90 YZ 250 came with an adapter disk like you are looking for.
This is my rifle, this is my gun, the YZ to go fast, the KDX is for fun!

Yes. Mine is 2001 220R. You're right. The 200 and 220R have different shock springs! According to Thumpertalk, the part number is different, and there is an adapter on the 200, like you said. Good catch. I hope it fits. I also hope there's enough clearance. Looks like the 200 spring is wider at the bottom, while the 220R spring is tapered.

The 200 and 220 have different fork springs but the same rear shock spring; a 5.0 - at least that's the case of the 3 220's I have owned :wink: .
The last rear spring I bought was a KYB, not racetech, and it was tapered and didn't need the adapter like the racetech units. I bought it from Fredette racing products.

Well, I wish I had known about that. Then I would have gotten the KYB instead.

According to the parts diagram, the 200cc rear springs is NOT tapered; while the 220cc is tapered. Their spring rate might be the same. I guess the 220cc spring is an improvement; it does not need the adapter.

Eibach is apparently giving everyone the no-tapered spring, and not providing the adapter. Eibach sux.

Something is amiss with the part diagram, I think. My 200 and 220 springs have all needed the adapter when getting straight wound springs - I just changed both my 200 and 220 original springs to 4.8's and those original springs were the same spring (a 1997 200 and a 2001 220). Not only that... fredette and racetech do not differentiate springs between the two bikes.

I think I remember having to put an adapter on someone's 1995+ shock years ago when I swapped their 5.0 for one from a KDX250.

Maybe you can find an adapter on eBay. I don't have any handy.
