KDX stock silencer on a 4T?
Odd question, I know....
I have a 2007 KLX250s that sufferes from an extremely restrictive silencer. Acceptable aftermarket cans are $300-$400 - so not acceptable after all.
I looked at my old KDX 220's stock silencer and it's nearly a perfect fit. A 1" long extension to the midpipe with a 15 degree curve at the end and it matches just fine along the KLX airbox and frame.
In most cases I would be concerned about old oil in the packing and the possibility of fire with the 4T heat. But IIRC isn't the KDX silencer a welded arrangement, meaning that oil couldn't get into the packing?
TIA for helping an old member.

Don't do it unless you want a nice smokey fire! Unless you can clean everything out and then repack with 4t packing I wouldn't do it.

Actually I thought the KDX silencer had no packing, just baffles.

I did that once, used the silencer off an old IT490 on an XR250.
Cleaned & repacked it prior to installation, worked just fine.

If I can't do it, I'm sure someone else can!

I thought the stock 1995+ spark arrestor didn't have packing, as well.

Yes, they have packing, and it should be an oily mess if you never changed it. Just clean and repack with 4t packing and good to go. The 4ts have higher exhaust temperatures.
EDIT - duh - I have a repackable FMF unit...Never saw a stock one before...

Are we sure about that? I don't think the H model silencers are re-packable. It just has a drain bolt, right?
I think as long as you get it good and clean, it should work just fine. Wonder how loud it's gonna be, though...

I thought it just had the drain bolt that you took out and revved the bike up to clean it out.

That is correct. You can't get at the "packing" without cutting it open and rewelding. I don't know how it is made inside, it may just be a series of baffles.I thought it just had the drain bolt that you took out and revved the bike up to clean it out.
I think it is going to be kind of loud, even on a KLX250.
I wouldn't worry about it catching on fire and melting side panels and your seat. It most likely will, but only once.
On my old XR400 I drilled a few extra holes in the removable baffle. It did not get much louder but it sure seemed to breathe easier

I don't have any spooge.. its all about the oil you use and the jetting.johnyblaze wrote:This forum had me convinced the KDX was so great there simply WAS no spoo....Mr. Wibbens wrote:so where do you imagine the spooge goes?

I personaly just would try the KDX silencer, what harm could it now possibly do?
A friend of mine had mounted a CR250 silencer of his XL500 because his original silencer was broken in half
Did the job just fine only the engine couln't breathe very well because the XL pipe is alot fatter than the CR250 silencer.
but its possible

Unfortunately, the KLX has no removeable baffles. You can drill the last baffle, but with only a 1/2" outlet, it doesn't make much of a difference.KarlP wrote:On my old XR400 I drilled a few extra holes in the removable baffle. The KDX silencer is about the same size as an aftermarket KLX muffler and has the same inlet, outlet diameters. I know the aftermarket mufflers offer no performance advantage (IIRC the advantage is from the aftermarket pipe) on the KDX but are much louder. I suspect the KDX muffler will perform like an aftermarket can for the KLX but be a lot more quiet.
All in all, only one way to find out. I'll report back if there's any interest.
