KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by kyledsmith87 »

What other springs fit the model with the 41mm USDs? I know the XR250 supposedly does, but what year? Also, is the length correct? Are there any other years that fit also?

Will these fit? http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/catalog/p ... lid=598002

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by KDXGarage »

In the USA, I recommend Race Tech brand. The 1995 - 2006 KDX200/KDX220R springs will NOT fit. Also, 1986 - 1992 KDX200 springs will NOT work, either. I have attempted a test fit.

If you can, stay away from progressively wound springs, and go with straight rate.

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by 80elkster »

I have a 93 and ended up buying springs from Fredette. Take a look at the KDX250, KLR/X 300 I believe they had the same forks. I know my springs were .42 kg and I weigh 245, they work good but I also have gold valves in mine. Not sure of other bikes that used the USD 41mm forks

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by KDXGarage »

The KDX250 and KLX300 had 43mm inner tubes, so the fork springs are a larger ID than the 1993 - 1994 KDX200 41mm inner tubed forks. Springs from Race Tech or FRP are the only ones I found to work. I have used both and prefer Race Tech. That is what I have in my 1994 KDX200.

3647 is the model number (36+mm OD and 470+mm length)

Shop around, as you can get them from an aftermarket dealer a little cheaper than ordering straight from Race Tech.

Also, don't get confused on these springs being listed for 1995+ models, then think that 1995+ OEM springs are going to fit into your 1993 - 1994 KDX200 forks. They will not. I have already tried it.

I never tried a set. The Race Tech models were a lot shorter. I would REALLY check the amount of travel before installing springs that much shorter.

What did you do to compensate for the shorter spring?

Also, this is starting to confuse me, the USD forks are 41mm OD, so what is the max width of the spring I can fit? 38mm? 36mm?

Basically, if we could realllllly ease it down for me (I know I can strip the forks on my bike to find out... but if you guys can save me from it until i get new springs i would be grateful!), what size OD and length fork spring fits the 41mm USD Kayaba forks?

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by KDXGarage »

I was meaning to say that the fork spring model that Race Tech had for the XR250L was a lot shorter than the model of springs that they had for the KDX200.

XR400R springs will NOT fit.

I would suggest you avoid progressively wound springs. Stick to straight rate, like the stock or Race Tech springs.

Street bikes weigh a lot more than your KDX, so those springs will be weigh too stiff AND way too short. Street bikes don't have 12" of travel.

1990 KX125/KX250/KX500 springs are way too long.

Most any 1989 - 1991 time frame fork spring is going to be too soft for most riders.

What is your weight in full gear??

It sounds like you are trying very hard to not have to pay for a new set of springs. I think you need to just go ahead and buy a set of Race Tech springs.

Re: KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by kyledsmith87 »

I'm not trying to avoid paying full price, I just need to know EXACTLY what I am buying, as I will be more than likely buying from America so if I buy the wrong springs I will be screwed to return them.

So do you know what OD / Length I need to get at all?

I have been on the race tech website and for 1994 KDX with "KYB41U" weighing 200lb (without gear) it tells me I need;
RT FRK SPR 35.8x472mm .42kg FRSP 364742

When I punch in XR400R I get the exact same details come up? So surely XR400R ones fit?

Also on ebay there is a listing for the same springs showing;

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

Post by KDXGarage »

What is your skill level, height in gear, weight in gear and normal riding terrain?

Race Tech has the 3647 springs. THOSE springs fit a few different models. If you are trying to buy some OEM Honda XR400R springs and put them in a 1993 - 1994 KDX200, it WILL NOT work. I hope that clarifies it, if it needed to.

The way the 3647 springs fit a Honda XR400R is because they are a touch narrower then OEM Honda springs and they use a preload spacer tube. The same is true for the 1995 - 2006 KDX200/KDX220R. Those OEM springs have too large of an OD to fit inside the 1992 - 1994 KDX200 tubes.

Here is a picture I took of another member's forks I worked on years ago:

I said in my last post, I am not trying to fit XR400R ones, I just wanted to know why they don't fit, were they too long or too wide or too narrow in the center or?

Anyway thanks for that! Hopefully I can get a pair this side of the sea and avoid all the carriage costs!

KDX200 93-94 Fork springs?

OK, hopefully, some of that helped.

As best I remember, OEM, stock Honda XR400R springs have too large of an OD to fit inside the 1993 - 1994 KDX200 tubes. The length is way too long, I am certain. Cutting them down would really jack the spring rate up.

Ok, according to the Eibach catalogue @ http://performance-suspension.eibach.de ... atalog.pdf

The Honda XR250R springs from 2005 have a spring rate of 0.40kg/mm, which is exactly what I need, I can pick some of these up from a main dealer for £25 each, it would cost me over £100 to get some racetech / eibach / progressive shipped from America. So do the stock XR250 definitely fit?

...and when you cut them down to 470-ish like they have to be, the rate jumps through the ROOF!!
