220 long range

Post by terminatr »

Hi. I'm pondering whether I should invest money to make my 2001 a long range bike. There's a dualsport rally coming up.
And the distance between gas station is about 120 miles. The terrain is mostly flat (Texas). If I am gentle on the throttle and
cruise at 55 MPH on flat dirt road, can my stock 220 get 120 mile range?

If not, what's the best way to carry extra gas? I notice no one make a gigantic fuel tank for the KDX. I'm thinking of buying a few MSR fuel bottles and load the saddle bag up with them. But this method is very bulky and inefficient.

IMS and clarke make bigger tank.

On another topic, you mention your bike is stock. Is your piston also stock?
If it is you ought to replace it asap unless you like getting stranded in the middle of nowhere and enjoy spending a lot of money...

An example of one KDX saved in the nick of time with a stock 220 piston.

Yes, I know about the piston problem on 220's. I haven't gotten around to replacing mine because I am thinking about selling the bike.
I don't ride it much anymore, because Big Gubermint closed down the woods near my home. The next nearest woods is 300 miles away. Since I don't really need a woods bike anymore, I'm thinking of buying a DR650, which can do really long range. Unless I can convert my 220 into a better dualsport bike. By "dualsport", I mean a dirtbike that can eat up lots of paved miles.

I think your 220 could make a pretty good DS. There are some caveats to using a 2t for a dual sport though. Want to make sure you run plenty of oil in your mix, and that your jetting is right, and not too lean. The forged piston would be a must, and a clarke or IMS oversize tank. There is also an upgraded lighting stator available, which makes it easier to run all the lights you would need.

I have already added DOT headlight and taillight to my KDX. I installed a LED brake bulb. So I don't need to upgrade the stator.

As I understand, the oversized Clark tank is only like 0.5 gallon more than stock. Not worth the $200 price tag imo.

Understandable. I don't know how much fuel the H series actually holds. My E series tank will hold about 3.5 gallons.

.

the stock tank holds 2.9 gallons, the clark tank is 3.6 gallons, that is 0.7 gallons more, or 24 % percent
so if he gets 80 miles on the stock tank he can get almost 100 on the clark

seems worth it to me (i put one on my 96 KDX i use as a comuter)

My KDX is dual sported and I seem to get about 40 mpg when I'm riding on the street.

http://www.procycle.us/bikepages/dr650.html#accessories I bought the Kolpin with mount for under $60 to extend my DR's range. Then just bought the 4.9 gal IMS.

Either of these may be a temp solution to your range issues as would a $10 plastic gas can from your local auto parts store. I have a 1.25 gal I strapped to my rear rack on one ride. Ugly and bulky, but I'm more about utility.

I don't know about the 2 stroke and heavy road miles - just not familiar enough with the KDX. The DR is a good all 'round bike but you will work 3 times as hard in off road conditions. I'll ride mine anywhere but it's not most folks first weapon of choice. If you can find a DR at a reasonable price and keep the KDX....best of both worlds. If you ever want info on the DR, feel free to PM me or post up in the Other Bikes section.
