Notching on the basket fingers would be most likely.

He replaced the basket, or filed it down? Smoothing them out with a file will work, but introduces more play between the tabs on the clutch plates and the basket fingers, so it may develop notches again more quickly. You can just pull off the outer clutch cover and have a look. If you lean the bike over to the left, you don't even need to drain the oil first.

My 89 is notches pretty good and will drag sometimes. It's really not bad though. Soon I will need to file it or replace it.

If you can still get one you might want to do it sooner rather than later and save the notched one for a spare. Unfortunately the KDX seems to be a forgotten bike by everyone that makes parts.

Perhaps. I'm pretty confident that we will be able to source parts one way or another for a very long time. The KDX is a pretty widely loved machine, and there are a lot of seriously talented people who own or have interest in them.

No argument there, but try to get even just a new set of plastics for an H, let alone an E. It can still be done but they are getting harder and harder to find and the options are getting fewer and fewer.
There is still a large demand for the KDX bikes but the aftermarket doesn't seem to care much about anything that isn't current production or a MX bike from the last 10 years. Sucks. And Kawasaki seems to be pretty willing to just drop part production as they feel the need.

At least with the internet, it is easier to keep stuff running than before. I had a '75 CR250R Elsinor back in '87 and it was near imposible to find parts for it, and it was 'only' 12 yrs old at the time (was still a relic though).

well if we go riding this weekend ill see how bad it really is and pull the cover this weekend. on a side note i had to replace my front master cylinder cause my dumbass broke the oem. i replaced it with a unit off a 96 kx250 cyl and lever. now it seems like i cant get the front brake to bleed out and get hard. you can squeeze the lever all the way down to the grip before it will stop. is the piston bleeding by that its not building up pressure or should i pull the line off at the cyl and brake caliber and see if theres any trash in the line?

Bleeding the front is a pain in the azz. Try bleeding it again, but tie the lever to the grip and let it sit over night before releasing the lever for the last time.

Don't kid yourself with parts availability. That clutch basket isn't being made anymore.
I may have spoke too soon. Pro-X may have a new for E models.

It's always been a real fine adjustment on my bike to get the clutch just right where it does not drag, nor does it slip either
In colder months I run a lighter oil

after i rode the bike adjusted the rear shock and carb found out i had lost my front brakes again after 15 mins of riding and the front forks are way too soft yet. on the other hand the clutch seemed to be ok. it wanted to grab alittle when the clutch was in but not bad as the day went on. so i think im not going to pull the cover just yet.
