Dampening Rod Nut Question

Post by UI Vandal »

I rebuilt my fork last week. I found out right before a ride while cleaning my work space the the lower washer that goes between the bushing and the oil seal was not reinstalled on one fork. Doh! Needless to say it blew out the seal the first ride. I have a a new seal to put back in, but I have one question.

While reassembling the fork, you must screw on the cap to the dampener rod. There is also a nut on the rod. Do you thread the nut all the way down the threads on the rod, or does it get tighten flush on the cap when the cap is tighten to spec?

Dampening Rod Nut Question

When I did mine last I made note of where that nut was. It was about 3/16" up from the end of the threads. Screw the cap on and snug the nut up against it.
I don't remember for sure, but I think that nuts position can be used to fine tune spring preload.

I would run the cap all the way down onto the rod instead of engaging fewer threads. Just lightly snug it by hand then spin the nut up. Hold the nut with a wrench, then torque the cap to the factory spec in the service manual.
