Today after pulling off the cylinder I was just twisting the kips shaft by finger and it felt like a spring or something fell out of place and the shaft didn't return to the correct position!
This ultimately blows, gotta pull inner clutch cover off? Broken pin?
At least it didn't break while out riding I guess... gotta look towards the bright side.

Yeah, I'd pull the inner clutch cover and see what's up with the KIPS governor.

I'm just having issues trying to get the clutch out. I was thinking a large oil filter wrench over the edge of the basket to hold it still. The motor is out of the bike and at the moment there is no bike to put the motor into so I can't just have it in gear and have the drive hold it. Any suggestions?

You can try sticking a penny between the gear on the back of the clutch basket and the primary gear.

impact wrench should do it.
I'd be careful with the penny, I cracked the gears on the clutch before...

If you ever want to wedge something between two gears to hold them from turning use a folded shop rag. It will feed in and lock up but isn't anywhere near hard enough to break anything.

Tried for a bit with different setups and I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to wait until I get the motor fitted with chain/sprockets and just put it in gear. Hopefully I don't forget...
