That would all come in from the top? That part of the slide isn't in the carb throat....it wouldn't work at all if it was!

Looks like carbon.

It is on the cap side of the slide, agreed?

Wait a minute...look at the smooth ramp on the bottom of the buildup. It's blowback from the intake blowing past the carb body/slide fit!

Uh-oh...looks like rings and reeds are in baaaaahd shape.

Wait another minute...I'm looking at the thing backwards. Never mind.

M0rie..yours or no? C'mon..fess up!! :wink: I know you're doing some carb work!

Lord no CC. I'd have figured the KTM engine cover in the background would have been the sticking point.

Its actually Smit-Dog's slide (DRN) 2k miles and he just checked the slide.
Must not have to adjust the carb very often.

What got me is the rest of the bike looks spotless, it was theorized that lube from the cable was running down into the carb, but I'm not buying that theory. Just wanted to see what the of you think.

I doubt it is m0rie's. There is a "KTM Racing Magnesium" cover behind the slide.

skipro3 used to do that, not taking my advice and all. :grin: I meant the "just spraying it right down the cable" part, as skipro3 had some carb issues caused by that at some point in time.

Maybe this is a last ditch effort to remove airborne dirt that makes it thru the airfilter before it enters the engine? :roll: Seriously, i'm way to lax on lubing my cables, maybe for the throttle cable thats a good thing? I guess i'll take the cable off the carb before lubing it next time.

I saw the 'mag..' part. While I didn't think it was a KDX, I didn't put it with a katoom.

Sue me. :wink:

I'd be concerned about it...even if a mod god isn't.

I don't lube my cables. Through the years I've proven to myself that lubing them makes them go away sooner than leaving them alone.

My own crooked look at the issue.

..Kind'a like looking at the slide backwards in the first place.....

Once a year for me... beginning of the season only. I have never had any cable issues... matter of fact, I have never had to replace a cable on any bike I have owned.

I use the "BikeAid" brand cable lube. It's marketed for bicycles.

I flush my cables with a spray brake cleaner to get all the crap out. Then I use a silicone spray that leaves a dry film behind so it' won't hold dirt.

That is on the engine side of the carb, based on the slide cut-away I see.
Blowback from bad reeds or something dripping down the throttle cable, or very dirty gas he's running.

Actually, it is the airbox side. Check the angle of cutaway.

James Dean thought it was dirt that had passed through the air filter. Stated something like - air filters are limited in the size of dirt particles that they can trap since the engine must breath --. In the owner's post he said he was using No Toil with twin Air filters and changing them approximately every 150-250 miles.

I was clueless due to the location of the crud on the slide did not make any sense to me.

Well... it's got to seal before the air filter will work. I believe that may have been the issue. the suction will be greater at the path of least resistance.

I have been guilty of not greasing the seal from time to time and also not making sure the filter is completely seated but I have never seen dirt pass through a filter like that.... ever.

Seems to me that if the dirt was coming from the filter, then it would be lower on the slide. Not up on the top. Most of the time the slide is low in the carb with the bottom being exposed the the incoming airflow. Unless you are some kinda maniac! So it seems to me that maybe the slide cap seal is bad or maybe it just wasn't tight.

Kdixer - You expressed my thoughts also. I really could not understand how the dirt would gather where it did.
