general topend work question

Post by G22inSC »

I am considering pulling down my topend to do an inspection but am curious about something. I have read through the manual several times and never noticed any information about typical deck clearance. It seems that every other bike in the family has specific information on measuring the deck clearance for correct clearance and/or compression. Is this something that is just not necessary for some reason on the KDX's or is it just not listed in the factory manual? Do you'll measure this or just buy the standard gasket and go with it? What is correct?

I just use the standard gasket sets.

I guess the KDX has plenty of room where deck height is not a problem.

Is there a way to check the general condition of the bottom end without a complete tear down and case split?

Yes. When the top end is off, make sure that the there is no radial end play in the lower rod bearing. lateral movement is ok but not radial (up down). Also you can pull the mag cover and look for oil residue at the bottom of the stator area. This is a sign of a bad crank seal. Check for radial play in the crank bearings here too by lifting up and down on the flywheel.

Also rotate the whole assembly and feel for any roughness.

Far as I know that's the quickest way to see what's up.
