Post by bart »

Hey guys, my new '96 KDX 200 desperately needs a new chain and sprockets. What chain and sprocket kit should I get? What are you guys running on your KDX woods beasts? thanks!!

The primary drive stuff from RMATV is good and affordable.

+2 on Primary Drive, bought OEM chain and sprockets for my kdx, and everything went well. About 5 rides in, and one chain adjustment.

Love the primary drive sprockets but the chains have stretched and not lasted for me.

I like an OEM front and that Z-Tooth sprocket from Sunstar (?)
A DID chain and good to go.

I don't know about Primary Drive.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am planning to get regular Sunstar steel sprockets. I am a beginner so I don't need real racey stuff. I was mostly wondering if I should change the gearing for riding technical single track? Possibly a 49t rear sprocket which I'd need a 110 link chain for, correct? What's "primary drive"??

For the chain I am looking at a DID 520 Standard Roller Chain: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/ ... =SLIsearch

Thanks again! I am a beginner to dirt bikes, tryin to get off on the right foot and not break the bank.

I like something better than Primary for the CS sprocket so I use Renthal. I have a Primary steel sprocket for the rear. Stock gearing. For a chain I went with an RK X ring.

Did they change from a 48 to 47t rear sprocket for 1995 kdx200? I got a '96, my dad wants me to get a 48 with a 110 length chain. No problem?

SS, Did the rk x-ring chain fit through the stock chain guide? I have to order soon as well...

I haven't put it on so I don't know just yet. Should have it on within the next month as my 200 project comes to a close.

When I bought my KDX200 (2000 model) it badly needed a back tire (dry rotted - not worn out). I decided to change the chain, sprockets, air filter, etc. while I was working on it. I bought DID 520 X-RING Chain, Renthal Front Sprocket 13 Tooth, and Renthal Rear Sprocket 48 Tooth.

I went with a PD XTS 12 tooth up front, Renthal 52 tooth aluminum rear, RK 120 link non-ring chain and a FRP guide.

I see that the RK chain I bought is not available now on RMATV, which may be for good reason. Some of the reviews said it stretched a lot. Mine did seem to stretch a lot just with one ride on it so far, but I need to sit down and figure out what the proper chain adjustment method is.

Most will say my choice of gearing is a waste, but I enjoy putting around the woods looking for new trail designs.

I bought a 120 link to make sure I had enough chain for my gearing and I ended up cutting extra links out till it was the right size.

One thing I know for sure, #2 on the rear wheel adjustment tabs is as low as you can go with a FRP guide and a 52 tooth rear sprocket. Anything lower will bind.

Primary Drive is a brand that RockyMountainAtvMc.com sells. They have all kinds of chain/sprocket kits for short money. They are a good value, meaning they last pretty well for the money.

woods bike needs new chain and sprocket

Post by SS109 »

Since this thread has been revived, I thought I would update on my chain and sprockets. My setup has been on two bikes, my '90 200 and my '98 220. I've had to adjust it literally once from my initial setting. Just finally replaced the countershaft sprocket and the rear I'll probably need to replace sometime this year. The chain is still in excellent shape. I will be buying the same setup again.
