expensive kick starter!!

Post by BFD »

My 96' kdx 200 kick start lever broke right next to the hinge. My god they're expensive! I welded it back together and so far it is holding up. Has anyone found an alternate kick starter, from another bike that will fit the splines? Maybe a lighter aluminum one? Thanks, BFD

do a search on KX kick starters. I think people use a KX 250 knuckle (the splined part) and a KX 125 lever. I belive FRP sells the set up but it is shorter than the stock kicker. But it is aluminum.

A brand new complete unit is about $90.

I find the shorter FRP makes it start easier.

I ran a KX 250 knuckle with a KX 125 lever, sadly for just one day. It fell off because I didn't locktite the retaining nut. It hasn't been found yet. The FRP lever looks as if it uses the KDX knuckle, which is nice. Also, it looks as if the KX 500 uses the same knuckle as the KDX, so you might be able to use one of those kickers, too.

That KX250 knuckle/KX125 lever set up isn't cheap either. Figured it up from Ron Ayers a while back.. $125.60 total.
If your knuckle is still in good shape, the FRP lever is definitely cheaper.

They're surprisingly expensive there, too. Most Buy It Now for $50 or more. Since you have to buy two different kickers, you're still in for $100.

Using a FRP kickstarter, no problems, I recommend it. Get yourself an autoclutch too, and kickstart less.

I've mentioned it before, but I just used a KX250 kickstart lever. It is on a Hybrid though. It works great and I don't have to worry about hitting the footpegs because it's too short. I think it is a from a 1999 KX250. Good Luck

Service Honda has the best price on a new, factory unit. I just bought one for my '90 for about $70.

I prefer the stocker

Carvr has that POS one from FRP, it's always wearing out here and there, I bet he has $500 in machine shop work getting it to last this long

Been runnin my FRP for almost 2 years now, no problems. Maybe the autoclucth helps as I don't shut the bike down near as much.

I'm using that kx250 boss / kx125 lever combo. I do like it, but I think the stocker is easier to start the bike with and less painful than slapping your foot into the peg repeatedly. I lost my stock kicker on the trail, and was able to get the bits off ebay for cheap to do this hybrid kicker thing. All in all it's ok. I might put the kx250 lever on it though, since it's still aluminum, but longer than the kx125 lever. I think my kx250 lever was a 98, not sure what year kx 125 lever i got...

+1 on the kx 125 arm and 250 boss. Yes, its kinda spendy but its more reliable than FRP unit. i know some have had great experiences with FRP lever but I did not. i have had two different friends and one repair tech brake them. Each time FRP was great to warranty them but got tired of wondering when it was going to break.
WR sold. Now have 03 and 04 KDX 220s.
KXF 250 forks. RB Carb and Head. FMF rev pipe. Long live the KDX !!!

The KX unit is a more robust "sealed" design anyways.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I might need something like that for my 250 hybrid build.
