found a 99 KDX, I think

Post by Rollo1 »

I found what is supposed to be a 99 KDX that seems ideal because the guy that owns it bought it new 11 years ago. However, in the picture it appears to have a purple seat and it has KDX in yellow stickers down the radiator shroulds...does that sound like a 99?

I would link it but I'm afraid a lurker might buy it out from under me.

just look at any other 95-06 KDXs and if it looks similar you got yourself a KDX :grin:

I just bought a 99 and it does have the yellow stickers but mine has a black seat and I'm pretty sure it came that way. He may have just replaced the seat. I took the yellow stickers off and put the 2002 graphics on.

if today is 2012 and he bought it 11 years ago its most likely a 2001

i guess it is possible it that some dealer had a 99 sit on the floor for 2 years but if you want to be sure ask for the VIN and have a look at this little nugget of into i found in the "H series info" section

Here's the VIN codes for ALL Kawasaki bikes, (as far as I know).

COUNT FROM LEFT TO RIGHT 10 CHARACTERS. Compare the 10th character of your VIN with the chart below.

1980 = A 1981 = B 1982 = C 1983 = D 1984 = E 1985 = F

1986 = G 1987 = H 1988 = J 1989 = K 1990 = L 1991 = M

1992 = N 1993 = P 1994 = R 1995 = S 1996 = T 1997 = V

1998 = W 1999 = X 2000 = Y 2001 = 1 2002 = 2 2003 = 3

2004 = 4 2005 = 5 2006 = 6 2007 = 7 2008 = 8 2009 = 9

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first character being the country of origin ---> 'J' for Japan
The second being Who made it ---> 'K' for Kawasaki
All the way thru till the tenth character being the year model.

Good stuff to know in case you come across a seller trying to pass off a 97
off as a 05' or whatever..

Today is still 2011 plus there is a good chance that it was a new leftover that was a year or two models old. Either way, it doesn't really matter. Just make sure his story checks out.

Even then, if the bike is in good shape at a decent price, the year model really doesn't count for much. They're all the same anyway.

If you can find out what year it is and it is older than they say you might be able to get them down some on the price. :wink: But like juliend sad 95-06 are the same bike for the most part so the exact year won't much matter.

Thanks guys....I really just wanted to know because I could get the price lower if it is older. I have found pictures of 2000 models and mid 90s but couldn't find the 1999 model pic.

I also found a 97 220 that looks really good in the pictures. I am going to try to look at both next week even though I don't really want to buy yet. I have been searching bikefinds.com and I have an unusual number of KDXes in my price range locally at the moment so I figure I better strike while the iron is hot....

thanks again for the advice...especially to the guy who had the 99 and the stickers...seat may just look purple in the pic.

The sticker on the steering head tube should say what year it is.
Also should say on the title. It.. does have a title.. doesn't it? :whistle:
2004 KDX 200.. Coupla mods
2009 KX250F.. Track Star
2007 Hayabusa.. Street Madness

Titles can be very elusive depending on where you are in the country. In NY KTM's are about the only dirt bikes that have titles. I have mine registered and it still don't have a title.
