what wire to draw from?

Post by diymirage »

hey guys
im trying to add some turn signals to my bike and im having a hard time doing this

at first i tapped into the yellow wire coming from the headlight switch but im finding nothing works (not even if i take out the flasher and run them as runninglights)

i checked my wiring harnas by hooking up my lawnmower batterie and somehow i can run the headlight OR the indicators, depending on which one i as ground

so here is my plan, can i cut the wire i spliced into the yellow and instead hook it right up to the regulator?
and then is it the black or the brown wire i would need?

thanks guys

(by the way, its a 96 KDX 200)

and it seems i can use the brown on the regulator as a positive lead and then ground to the black/yellow lead am i right ?

I believe so, yes. Or you can just ground to frame:)

awesome

(i wasnt sure if i could ground to the frame because it looked like the regulator needed to be on the ground wire aswell)

the way i wired them up at first was to draw from the yellow wire before the light switch and then ground to the frame but that didnt do anything

however...im starting to get a sneaky suspescion the flasher is not up to the task so before i unsolder everything and draw from the brown wire on the regulator im going to disconnect the flaser unit and tape those two wires together...if im right that the flasher is non functional in this AC system i should be able to have running lights instead of blinkers

if this isnt the case i will unsolder my connections from yellow and resolder them on brown and see what that does

thanks

If you hooked them to the yellow before the regulator, there's a good chance you cooked something or popped the bulbs.

actually, i found that out when i tried to find the right wire, i used a lightbulb to find the hot wire and it popped right away
thats when i decided to cut into the yellow leading up to the headlight switch which is what i am connected to right now

i know all the bulbs in the indicators are good because i can get them to work by hooking up the lawnmower battery to it

houston...we have lift off

i pulled the flasher and connected the wire going to it (hot from the yellow wire leading to the headlight switch) to the wire coming from it (to the indicator switch) and TADAAAAA i now have running lights i can turn on or off

(just dont kill the headlight while the blinkers are on or the sudden spike will fry the first bulb in the series)

now i just need to find a flasher that will run on DC and replace all the bulbsies with LEDs to lower the draw and the cops will have to find a new reason to hares me (which i have no doubt they will)

quick question, will i need to change anything to run LEDs on my bike ?
(most of them say they are DC only)
