200 and 220. Can they live together?

Post by MadMax »

Has anyone here put a 220 cylinder, piston and pv on a 200? What were the results? I have a '95 200 that's had the RB treatment on the head and carb, a FMF pipe and silencer. I'm gonna need to have the cylinder replated soon and was thinking about converting to a 220 for the larger bore. Will I have a jetting nightmare? Will this even be worth it?

Thanks!

so u wanna go from a go fast bike (200) to a go slow bike (220)?
If that's the case, then yeah I think u can, the only difference between the 200 and 220 is the cylinder, carb and head. I dunno if ron cut the head the same way or not . Shoot him an email and ask him.
As for jetting, it'll be different.

It will need the ports altered. Eric gorr builds a 225 out of the 200.

As far as interchangeability the 200/220 piston/cyl/head as a unit will change out.

So is the porting on the 220 that miserable? I understand that in stock form the 220 has the smaller carb but I'm running the bored out 200 carb. I'd think unless the porting sucks, the bike should benefit from the extra bore size.

Thanks for the response, keep 'em coming!

The 220 is a fine motor. With the RB work done to it it is more like a small 250.
There is nothing wrong with the 200. It is more like a bigger 125.

I imagine there will be some differing opinions on here, though.

In your case, I'd just replate the 200 cylinder you have. It will be good enough.

Yes, the porting on the 220 is MUCH milder than the 200. It's not that it's miserable, but just that it's different. The low carb and low end porting give the 220 loads of low RPM grunt, but it falls flat way sooner than the 200. In anything but the tightest nastiest trails the 200 will smoke a 220.

my bad I thought he wanted to replace his 200 jug with a 220 while replating the 200...
I considered doing a 225 out of my 200 when I did my hybrid, but I gave up because of price and I didn't want to give up ANY of the KDX reliability.
There are a few out there (bored 220 or 225) and they seem to be quite reliable but din't want to mess with it.
If I was gonna do it, I'd use a reputable builder like EGorr that knows how to do it with a KDX.

i remember that one. Wasn't that when he was still using US chrome?
In any event, to the op: do you research for a reputable builder

Yeah I had planned on it. I just figured someone here had tried this before and would be able to tell me if this ordeal is even worth it. I won't be going the big bore EG route regardless. If the 220 cylinder would be a suitable fit I might have tried it. I knew the carbs were different with the 220 being a 33mm vs the 35 or 36mm unit on the 200. I had no idea whether the porting was that different. Oh well, from what I've read so far, I'll just stick with the 200 jug and keep on keeping on.

Now, my next project will probably be a 220 fixer upper.

Ciao!

I ride a 220 with the RB head and carb mods, vForce 3, and an FMF desert pipe and couldn't be happier with the power. It has plenty of over-rev and low end. I also have a 200 and I prefer the power of the 220. Just personal preference. In fact, when I built my hybrid, I went with the 220 jug.

To answer your question, the difference between the two is strictly in the bore and porting. As such, the 200 head does not work on the 220 jug unless it is modified to match the bore. I once bought what was supposed to be a 220 head on ebay and sent it to Ron to mod. It was actually a 200 head and he told me not to run it on my 220. Otherwise, carbs interchange, kips are the same, etc.

The real deal here is that you just can't bore it out and replate it, and expect it to run right without doing some work to the ports(it's a port timing thing, I'm not an expert). Not really talking about 'porting it' in the sense of making a screamer out of it...although that would cost the same.

The factory ports in the 220 vs the 200 aren't apples-apples to the above. The porting characteristics of the 220 are different than, let's say, a 200 bored to 220 and 'fixed' to compensate for bore.

The head would also need cut of course, and just like with the porting you could have it 'fixed' IE like stock, but compensated for bore change....or have it cut for VP c12....same cost.

I've seen that horror story beofre from EG, but have seen other good reports. I'd use a builder that knows about port timing vs bore for sure!! The real scoop here is that a 220/225 should be able to be built to run like the 200 it started as (vs running like a 220), but with more meat everywhere, esp the bottom.
