This time of year a lot of riders are doing rebuilds and upgrades. If your doing your stem bearings and have a mig welder you can use, i can save you hours with a die grinder.
-With your races in the frame run a light bead all the way around the middle of the bearing race, let cool and it will fall out. Repeat on the bottom race and done! Just a helpful trick I've learned.

Never had any trouble getting them out with a drift

I did that on KX 65 wheel bearings that the center broke out of. Couldn't get a drift on them. Welded them and they came right out.

This is great info. I have an H motor that I want to rebuild this winter, but I've been delaying the start because I wasn't sure how to remove the outer race of the lunched countershaft bearing. I considered cutting notches so I could get a drift onto it and hit it from the other side, but this gives me a semi legitimate reason to buy a welder :)

This also would have made replacing my last set of stem bearings in my Husky easier, too. I had a heck of a time getting the top race out--there was only the tiniest lip of the race to get on with a thin screwdriver (which is now ruined, but the way). Probably took me the better part of an hour of pounding to get that thing free.

Just be aware that MIG welders using flux-core wire tend to leave more spatter around where you are welding. The flux allows it to stick much more readily (to steel) than when using a shield gas welder.
