when I first start it....with the choke on?

I don't know why, but my 96 KDX and big thumper both idle a little high with the choke on. The carb must add more air with the extra fuel to let it idle faster. If it is idling really high, maybe your in-tank filter is getting plugged up and it is running a touch lean.

Pretty normal. The choke is an enrichment circuit, so it's dumping extra fuel in. You can regulate idle speed by flipping choke on/off until it levels out or until it idles with choke off.
