I think 2500 or even a little more could still be a good deal.
Here is what happened to me:
I bought my bone stock 2001 KDX 200 in December of 2010 for 1300 bucks. It had 14 miles on it.
Here are the mods I did:
Scotts Stabilizer = 450
Pipe = 200
FRP Suspension = 600
Barkbusters = 75
RB Carb = 150
FRB Chain Guide = 45
Gripper Seat = 75
Renthal Bars = 75
Pirelli Tires = 150
That all adds up to a little over 3,100 dollars. I know it is a lot, but I did it over the course of a year. I know I cant get my money back, but if that bike can be bought for 2500, or maybe even 2700, it is not a bad deal. You can spend a lot less on a KDX, but Im not sure if it will be as nice of a bike. That bike has more mods than mine. Does it make sense to spend that much on a KDX? I dont know. I sure have had fun, and I really like my bike. (46 year old C rider)
Just my .02 cents.

I agree with the above post. I'd have no problem offering him $2500 for that bike. Maybe a little more if you go check it out and it's as nice as it looks. He's got a lot of nice stuff on it. I don't mind paying a little more for a clean and well cared for dirt bike.

The used KDX market is typically $1400-2000 for clean 2001-2004 models. (KBB is $1850 retail). The mods are definitely a plus, but in the end it's a 7 year old bike sporting 17+ year old technology.
At $2500+ people are looking at 3-5 year old two strokes with modern technology. Paying a similar price for a KDX, no matter how nice, will significantly limit resell potential. So our seller is essentially looking for someone with cash who doesn't know the used motorcycle market.

I agree with you, and I think about this often.Weave wrote:The used KDX market is typically $1400-2000 for clean 2001-2004 models. (KBB is $1850 retail). The mods are definitely a plus, but in the end it's a 7 year old bike sporting 17+ year old technology.

However, my bike was brand new, and allowed me to mod it as my skills improved. For 2500, I could find a KTM 200, but it wont be new. Perhaps a nice YZ 250...........but again, would it have the mods that this kdx has? Would it have as few hours? Would it be set up for the woods? Is the OP already a great rider? You are going to lose money for sure. Most of us do in this game. However, you will have a pretty sweet do it all, reliable bike.
The smart thing for me to have done would have been to ride the snot out of my bike with no mods. I could have sold it for close to what I paid for it, and stepped up to the latest greatest KTM, Berg etc. However, I have had such a good time with my KDX that I started thinking that it might be even more fun with this mod, and that upgrade! Pretty soon your addicted! Oh well, if I could do it over, I would do the same thing. The main reason being that I am a novice, and a sweet late model rig might have been too much bike to start with.
Anyway.........now I am rambling.......
Just my thoughts.
