qeustion about gearing (AKA why do i have a first gear?)

hey guys,

ive finally had a chance to do some playing and practicing with the bike
on flat rather solid dirt ive noticed i can pop the front end from a near standstill or slow roll in second gear no problem

with a little speed and if i hit the sweet spot i can do the same im 3rd (though i cant keep it up like i can in 2nd)

if i try anything like this in 1st it seems like the rear end just loosens up the dirt and slips while i quickly rev out without really going anywhere

i checked the gearing on the bike and it seems to be running 13T up from and 50T in the back (at least, thats whats stamped on it)

is this stock gearing or has someone modded it ?
should i stick with it or change to different gearing (i know, hard to say without knowing my riding habits, but im so new at this, i dont have any)

what are your thoughts?

thanks guys :)

47 is stock in the rear. Where you riding in MI?
That 50 seems pretty low for the riding I do in MI..

just putting across holland

so, the 50 gives it more grunt but lower topspeed right ?
mhhh
if i were to go back to the 47 would i loose the ability to lift it in 3rd ?
but maybe 1st would be more usefull ?

(just thinking aloud here)

Try playing with this to get an idea of what different sprockets will do. http://www.gearingcommander.com/

If your bike is running right it should still lift the front in 3rd. Good luck!

If you don't feel like it's lacking on the top end, I would leave it low. 13/50 is a pretty good combo for general use. If you do a lot of road work or wide open trails you might enjoy a higher ratio.

my 220 was running 13/48 gearing which i found real good on my trails ( tight single track/ woods etc) but it ran out of steam whilst riding on the road getting to these trails! i guess without pushing it 45mph (cruising) yet would excelerate up to 75mph without no problem..i have since changed my gearing to 13/46 (13/47 std) the bike still pulls very well on my local trails without hardly any sacrafice to the good bottom end pull but while riding on the road i`m now able to cruise 50/55 mph & excellerate to just past 85mph..the fuel consumption has improved also ..experimenting with your gearing to suit your needs is deffo worth trying.

thanks for all the input guys

i think i will keep it the way it is, it seems to run fine and i do enjoy lifting that front end
(one of these days ill take the carb apart and clean it to make sure im not loosing power there)

i was just wondering why first gear is so low, maybe im not riding in bad enough terain to need it ?
