ill mention the allen heads to Ron when i finally get the moneys to send the carb in ;)

i took her out for a ride just now and once she warms up she really does do well
i hit a rough spot after i plowed through a waterpit that was deeper then i suspected but that must have been due to all the water that got on the engine

a minute or so of WOT cleared that right out

but i still find myself not caring for 1st gear, not unless im really crawling through mud or over loose gravel thats on an incline (like the side of a railroad track)

does that sound normal for these bikes?

I almost never use 1st gear. I usually start out in 2nd unless I stall it on a steep hill or something. I was even thinking about putting a smaller rear or larger front sprocket.

so the bike is probably acting normal?

good
(i have found i like taking off in second better, even from a dead stop)

ill still fiddle with the jets any...just for the halibot

is it normal for these bikes to be so cold blooded ?
i usually fire her up and for the first mile or two she sputters and mutters
then, after about 5 minutes she wakes up and smoothes out (of course by then im at my job anc ready to shut her down)

The allen head screws can be had at most hardware stores. I would go with stainless. The RB thumb screw is a handy thing to have but I belive you can only get it with the carb mods.

You want to do the plug test in the highest gear you can but 4th should work fine.

You can change the main by removing the 17mm plug but it can be a pain to get the new jet started. Give it a try but you may find it to be just as easy to pull the carb and remove the bowl.

And as gregp mentioned you will be going down in the jet size. I would pick up a 42 and 45 pilot and a 150 and 155 main to get started.

Just my 2 cents but you don't have to pull the carb to remove the float bowl. Just loosen the two boot clamps and pull the slide out and disconnect the fuel line and you can rotate the carb enough to remove the float bowl. It's a lot easier than fighting to get the carb back into the boots. I like to put a paper towel or two down to catch any fuel that will come out and to catch the float hige pin in case it falls out.

Yes, jet a bit leaner and the bike will not sputter for quite so long, but it still will require some time to warm up (as all IC engines do) before it runs cleanly. Mine will not run cleanly for the first 2 or 3 minutes at least.
Your gearing sounds as if it has been changed from stock. Many of us who ride in the woods a lot gear our bikes down, with either a 12t counter shaft sprocket, or a 13/51-ish combination.
If you are using your bike as a pavement commuter, you should leave the gearing stock (13/47?) or even go a little bit higher in ratio. Just keep in mind that the KDX was designed as a very user friendly trail bike and that it will probably never be a great street bike.

thanks for all the input guys

i picked up the suggested 42, 45 pilots aswell as the 150 155 mains today
what should i start out with?

as for the gearing and street/woods use, i do use it mainly as a street commuter but i do enjoy of roading a lot more so i dont mind it being set up for that more then a streetbike

Did you get the Bill's pipe? I had one on a 90 YZ250 and it worked vey well. It was on the bike when I got it, so I can't compare it to anything else.

I am at 155/42 with a modified airbox and pipe and silencer, and still a little too rich at 75 degrees.

Of course you will have to set it for your own elevation/temperature range. We are supposed to have a high of 50 on Saturday, but it will be October shortly.
This is my rifle, this is my gun, the YZ to go fast, the KDX is for fun!

havent dared to bring it up to the wifey yet
then again....i will be having a birthday here in few weeks so i might try convincing her thats what i need

i started off with the 150/42 combo and it runs way bestester then it did before but i havent had a chance to really tinker with it yet
i can tell its definatly quicker to warm up and it idles now (something it didnt do before)
but because of life in general i havent had a chance to warm her up and adjust everything

Golden advice right there. Too rich never hurt anything, too lean can cause some pretty rapid destruction!

ordered the bills pipe today
(the guy selling it claims to have bought up their entire inventory, i guess they are out of buisness?)

also fiddled a bit with the jetting, even with the 42 pilot my airscrew is still right about 2.5 turns out

should i go even smaller?
(looks like im at 610 feet, for what its worth)

I would wait on doing any more jetting till you get your new pipe as that will be what you want to be jetted for.
Where in MI you from ?

holland area

know of any good trails around here ?

(or if you ever want to ride with a novice drop me a line, we'll get together)

i guess i will hold off further jetting, seems pointless like you said to set it up for something that will just get changed anyway

Silver Lake is ok and there are some DNR trails at Ludington I believe.
I always ride up north St Helen, Rose City, Mio and Cheybogan.
Cheybogan is about the best. There is a pretty large group riding there
next thursday-sunday staying at the Bluff Campground.

i think ludinton would be do-able
still over an hour drive just to get there though (and i dont believe in trailering any vehicle that can power itself)

it would be cool to head up to the campground but i doubt the wife would let me

Got the pipe in the mail today but the wife wont let me put it on until my birthday ( the 24th )
Any pitfalls to watch for when installing a pipe on these bikes?
