how to hook up indicators
hi
this is my fird KDX (and my first post here) and i really like the bike
but i would like to hook up some sidemarkers just as a courtesy to other drivers on the road
i think i have all the parts to pull this off but i have a few question
would my 96 KDX 200 put out enough power to light the indicators or will it dim hy head and tail light to far (ive read a bit about a high output coil, where would i find those and where is the stock one located)
i think i also read something about the KDX being DC and everything needing to be converted to AC which i didnt quite get, i mean, arent the head and tail light AC?
any help is apreciated, thanks guys

Hard to answer without knowing what the specs are on the lights you are installing. The KDX is an AC system. It works fine for most lights. The lighting coil is behind the flywheel. The stock lighting coil is about 35 watts if I remember correclty, so just the stock headlight/taillight alone taxes it. You can rewind yours (some how-to's on this forum), or you can get a 65 watt unit from stealthy offroad.

if im not mistaken they lights came of some sort of mid 80s kawasaki...a 750 im told
not sure if i would want to try and rewind the stock coil, seems a bit....well...coutryside engineering
i'll google stealthy and see what that brings up
think i could just plug into the hot wire for the headlight before the switch?

Yes, you could do that.
If those lights came off a big bike, probably gonna pull more than your stator puts out. You should be able to get a number off the bulbs themselves, and look them up.

Like juliend said, the Stealhy 65 watt stator does a good job. However, just running street lighting from a 750 would tax it pretty good let alone adding side markers/turn signals. You would probably need to add a battery or a capacitor for low RPM operation (ie; sitting at stop light) or rewind your own stator for higher output.
BTW, rewinding your own stator is not redneck engineering. It is the very thing any company that does stator rewinding does.

and after seeing how much a 65 watt coil goes for i just might try rewinding my stock unit
(i guess it just seemed odd to me since i never heard of the practice)
got any leads on how to go about rewinding it?

Probably around 70 - 75w at idle. More than stock, for sure.
Some other information I have stumbled upon. If you get hands on another stock or aftermarket stator, take half the plate stack and add to yours, then add as many winds as you can fit with 17g wire, should net about 100w. Second hand info, so take it as you will.

i read 4 pages of the stator thread but i only got about 2 of em...tops.
but the mechanics of it seem simple enough, so i should be able to pull it off
i tried finding the parts today but they are gone
so im going to scavenge it all off ebay
i guess ill go woth brand new indicators, switch'ms and then scratchbuild the wiring harnass
my only question would be how to hook up the flasher doohickey
any thoughts?

ok, i got most of my parts ready so now im looking at where to draw power
here are my 3 options (the ones i can think off, if anyone has another i'd be glad to hear it)
1 open the flywheel cover and solder a second wire directly to the lightcoil
2 tap into the yellow wire from the coil after it leaves the block
3 tap into the wire that goes to the headlight right before it gets to the switch
thoughts?
